I'd be interested to know why a by-pass hose on a Mini is a "must have", but the same engine in a Metro doesn't need one. If its all down to "progress" can we not just plumb the Mini the same as the metro?

Over 30 years ago after a By-pass Hose failure, i blocked it off and left the thermostat as is (no holes). There were no issues from doing this only the heat now actually got hot. Since doing that way back then, I've done it on every engine I've ever built and had no issues from it.

I'm reliably informed by a pump designer that the location of the by-pass take off on the pump will also lead to cavitation.

The Metro heater regulated temperature by mixing cold air with what came through the matrix, so water always flowed unrestricted by a valve. The theory of the bypass being under the thermostat is to create flow around the thermostat  so it can sense the water temperature and operate responsively.

Can't comment on Moke's experience, but he certainly has more of it than most of us.

Thanks again for the info. I might try what Moke suggests and can always drill the stat if necessary.

I really appreciate all the knowledge and experience that newbie like me can tap into on this forum.

:highfive:
