Jesus that must off got really hot to melt that bad, how long was it on for!!
The plastic must be crap to melt by the heat of the consol, i could leave my ps1,ps2,ps3 on for 24hours and not one has done that, must be monkey plastic.

3 Red rings is down to overheating issues, you need a household fan next to it when in operation also sticking extra pc fans in the caseing will help
aswell as drilling more vent holes, if they dont repair it or replace it someone should be able to sort it pretty cheap.

to add, have you had your xbox stood up? looks good but the main air intake is on the bottom when its stood up, therefore gets blocked by the floor  lay it down so it's now to the right and you'll have better air circulation. Plus when its stood up the two biggest creators of heat are now at the top, heat rises and gets trapped in the small space there, where there's is little ventilation.

Damn mines stood up :genius: IMHO Xbox customer services are rubbish mine has been away 4 times until on the 4th time the sent me a new xbox poor hilary :) :P
They will probably accept it craig but how long did u leave it for? :P

That's all garbage that Microsoft tell people to try to limit the amount being sent back within the warranty period. They know fully well that the reasons X-boxes fail are all down to terrible build quality. If your X-box is one of those that is destined to meltdown, there's almost nothing you can do to stop it short of opening it up and building it properly like Microsoft should have done in the first place. They know which batch numbers are gong to melt, they just won't release the information. The best thing is to let it overheat and melt within three years so that they have to send you a new one. If you treat it with kidd gloves like they suggest it will probably live long enough that you have to buy a new one when it does eventually expire because it will no longer be their problem. There are three different main faults that have been found at the various X-box repair centers and they all come from the production line. Some boxes are made with no thermal paste on the chips. Some are made with the plastic shipping covers left on the heatsinks, blocking the fins. These are the ones that tend to melt the most. The real problem is the position of the GPU allows no air flow over it which is a basic design issue that isn't helped by the other problems. If you haven't played a lot of GPU heavy games though then one of the other problems will probably kill the box. When they are returned most of them have had a copper heatpipe unit added to the GPU, the same heatpipe that is standard on later batches of X-boxes and on the Elite. If air could flow over it the GPU should be able to cool itself well enough so it doesn't technically need a cooler, not including one sounds like an accountant's design decision to me. Either that or there was a last minute design change that reduced the clearance around the GPU and wasn't researched well enough. Maybe they weren't originally going to have the waisted design. It doesn't take much buildup of dust inside the case to completely seal the GPU off from the world. Since mine was returned (it melted with three weeks left on the warranty!) it has been fine and it now sits upright, in a cabinet, under the TV, by a bookcase, with the power brick right behind it. Exactly where Microsoft say not to keep it. It's been perfect and works a lot faster than it used to before it had the extra heatpipe (and a new motherboard and DVD drive!) fitted. Before it died I was very careful with it. It was laying down, it was on its own shelf several inches from the wall, the power brick was a distance away and not on the floor, there were several cubic feet of free air around the X-box and I Hoovered it out every now and then. I believed the hype and garbage. It still died. Microsoft very nearly made it, only three more weeks and they would have had me buying another box. Now that it's been built properly I treat it like any other appliance and it works just fine.

My younger brother's on his fourth XBox now, every single one has done the Ring of Fire death on him... they've all been replaced by MSHQ. As long as there are no OBVIOUS tamper marks, like screwdriver scratches and so forth, they should be fine. Given the heat damage to this one, there's no way they can say it's user inflicted unless you've held a heat gun on it. That plastic is quite clearly warped through heating rather than bent through application of force. If you actually tried to bend it that much by force, it'd probably shatter.

Cheers for that Dan, seems like an interesting story. You'd think that such a big company would have the decency to give us products that aernt going to melt themselves or die in anyway. UPS didnt even come today? If they dont take it back i really wont be happy. Like alot of xbox users im just a 16 year old lad, ive been saving for a mini for 3 years and i reaaally dont have much money to spare, i shouldnt have to fork out on buying a new console because they get there consoles made out of Cr*p basscially.

Its not like im addicted, I can play my brothers one for sure, Ive got others thing to do with my time anyways, but ive bassically thrown £120 in the bin if i dont get it repaired. Not cool.

Yes, 4 Xboxes... he treats the current one with kid-gloves and has a large fan switched on next to it when using it.

Cool, I heard about those fans you could by that stick to the back too, apparnelty they just block the air flow and melt to the console, too!
