I bought some rear subby mounts on ebay today, after asking the seller before it ended about postage the replied with what I thought was expensive so when I challenged him I had the reply of
No, Thye are to heavy for that service. I just tried the smallest box I could get them to fit in to keep the weight dwn and they are still 1.3 kilogrames, which has lost a tad of the weight I first based it on. If you put that weight in the royal mail postage calculator on line. The best rate is £4.41 with standard parcels.
At this stage I was thinking twice about buying them but in the end I placed my bid and paid the amount with the postage and thought it was done andsent a message asking to be told when I he has posted them to which I got this reply
Hi, Thanks for the quick payment. However you are a bit to quick, as you need to wait for a sellers invoice to come to you before paying. Before I can post this I nee to purchase some parcel tape & bubble wrap tomorrow, which I will have to charge you a % of purchase costs, hence the saying "postage & packing charges". All you have paid for is the postage. I don't wish to come across as harsh, but please bear in mind you won a £0.99 listing, which ebay & paypal take a cut from. If I was to purchase packing materials at my own expense, travel to my local post office, and then only charge you the post office postage amount, I would be loosing money & making lots of effort for no gain, I would be bearly making £0.40 anyway. But I prefer to see perfectly good parts be re-used, rather than be chucked in the bin as many people would, rather than go to lot of hastle to only get anough money back to cover the costs of a packet of chrisps !. Anyway, I hope you appreciate where I'm coming from, and I will send you an additional invoice via pay-pal to cover the difference, once I have purchased the packing materials I need. Regards Simon.
Not really sure what to make of it? I mean yes the postage charges were not on the listing meaning I should have waited for him to send the invoice but as he had already sent me the cost in the message I added this while paying for the item to speed things up. I've done this in the past have had no problems.
Really if he is nit picking over me winning a 99p listing as well then he shouldnt have listed it at that price?
At the moment I dont feel like going through with it because of how hes nit picked a little but as I've already paid I dont really want to go through the hassle. I guess its my fault as I made the assumption his postage price included the packaging?
What do you make of it?

"hence the saying "postage & packing charges" Yes I know, I do understand english (but then again I assumed his expensive postage charge included the price of packaging?)
"but please bear in mind you won a £0.99 listing, which ebay & paypal take a cut from" Dont list your item at 99p then if your not happy with selling it for that amount?
Is it still the case that 99p listings are not charged insertation fees? What percentage would ebay take out of 99p?

No, hate selling stuff on ebay because of stuff like this, don't forget paypal will take a cut, aswell as ebay cut and listing fee. I'm not sure how much, could be over a quid, as I never bother with stuff that don't sell for much as I cba with listing it etc etc, if he hasn't got £50 in his paypal account it will cost a fair bit to transfer it too his bank account too. Then he's got to package it up, he should just have enough money to pay royal mail if he brought the packaging out of his own money. So he will be down fuel, time and packaging materials. He aint trying yo scam you, he's just trying to break even.this is why I hate selling stuff on ebay
Why is that? Do you mean you hate buying on ebay because of things like this?

Hi,
I dont think I have to wait for the sellers invoice before paying otherwise ebay wouldnt let me pay for something without the invoice? When I asked about the price of postage you replied with a cost and as normally is done I thought the price for packaging had been factored into the price. As for "hence the saying postage & packing charges" yes I do understand english.
If you look on a ebay listing, the price for "postage and packaging" is listed as "postage" meaning the price of packaging has been factored into the price. Are you telling me once the buyer wins an item you want to charge them for packaging as all they have done is paid for the postage?
I understand where your coming from with the 99p but dont list your item at 99p then if your not happy with selling it for that amount?
Sorry I dont mean to come across as harsh. Im happy if there is no bubble wrap, if you dont wish to go ahead then refund me what I've paid and we can mutually end the whole transaction?
I'll let you know what happens

Yeah I understand what you are saying but if he wanted to break even he should have started the auction at a higher price rather than 99p? Its happened to me where items have gone for 99p or even where postage has cost me more than I thought it would. At the end of the day I told the buyer it would cost this much and they pay that, I dont then charge them for the ebay listing/cut, paypal fee and packaging on top. If your unhappy with paypal fees then dont request to be paid by paypal.

If he's quoted you 4.41 then that's what it should be, and if he wasn't happy for them to sell for 99p then he needs to have put a reserve on them surely!
So I think he's being disorganised - he didn't think this through properly. For the sake of an easy life you could go along with it. He doesn't need to buy bubble wrap, just a bubble padded envelope for about 50p
I think on this occasion I'd be inclined to just give him what he's asking for the postage but perhaps comment on the fact that he would perhaps have happier customers if he were to work out his costs and be upfront about them right from the start of his listing. And learn from it for future ebay purchases - I spend a lot more time checking out ebay listings before clicking 'bid' than I used to due to some up and down experiences
