Bought another mini the other night, Its got a half ass install which starts to smell of burning wires if its on for longer than 10 minutes.
I need to run all fresh wires and everything in the next few days.

Im getting a fiberglass dashboard from Scurvy soon, And I will be wanting a decent install which goes reasonably loud Because of the straight through exhaust and K&N filter.

Who thinks what to the Kenwood 6X9 subs?
A pair of them mounted on an underseat kickboard?
Would they drop as low as a proper sub?

I REALLY dont want to put a sub in the boot again, Its soo "Un origional". I want somthing a little different because Im going to try and hit the Magazines with this new car. (CF bonnet to come, Along with door poppers, leccy windows etc :cheese: )

So, Fiberglass dashboard.

a pair of Components up front, mounted in airvent holes on Fiberglass dash. (amp'd)
Should I build enclosures or do they sound best free air?
Tweeters on top of the dash aimed at people sat in front.
6x9 subs in underseat board in the back. (amp'd with the 200watt Kenwood amp supplied with subs)

Any recomendations... Oldschool? I know you know your stuff!

Okay i'd fit a pair of components or coaxs in the front in some proper builds, best to mount the speakers as low down as you can (without them being obstructed) and then aim them up towards your ears. Go for 5" minimum or 6.5's if you can.

As for subs you could fit a pair of 8's under the seat at an angle, i'd put them in sealed boxes, they would out perform the 6x9's every day of the week. You could mount them free-air but you really need to do a good job of sealing the board (don't even look at what they did in this months minworld..... idiots!).
It would probably just be as easy to build a couple of boxes instead and you would get a lot more from them and they won't take up any more space.

Well, Ive just bought a pair of SPLX coaxs in my modified door bins. They are 13cm, but they crackle before they even get a bit loud, I think its because of the SH1tty head unit!

Any recomendations on HUs?

Cheers

a Pioneer is used by a friend of mine in his escort who came 2nd with 144.2 db in the UK finals so I would recommend them. Alpine hu's are good too.

Okay throw the shitty splx's in the bin, they are probably crackling because they are *******.

Errm right how much have you got to spend? and we can recommend a system for you, if you want bargain basement then gor for an entry level pioneer or alpine headunit (don't buy sony!) and use jbl speakers, you'd struggle to get better for the money and they aint much dearer than the cheapy splx's.

Yea, I got the SPLX for the front as a tempory thing because im not buying ICE until ive got my Fiberglass dash and boot build installed.
That way I can go and get the suitable stuff.

I DONT want 6x9s again.

I dont really have a limit on what I have to spend providing its not silly money.

I want to keep it cheapish though. sort if couple of hundred quid.

Okay couple of hundred quid?

8" rockford fosgate sub (150w rms) £42
5" JBL coaxials £34
Vibe blackbox 2 channel amp (150w rms bridged) £75
Basic pioneer MP3 headunit £79

this comes to £230 for this lot, you could always exchange the 8 for a 12 for around the same kind of money, i know its a mismatch of brands but thats often the cheapest way. You'd run the coaxs off the headunit and the amp would be bridged to run the sub.

Cool. I was interested in the idea of putting 8"s under the seats. I'd be interested to see someone build it before I did it.

But will 5" coaxs go loud?  :w00t:

<|Ben|>

Well mine do, the idea is that the subs will give the majority of the bass (as bass is non directional) and the coaxs give everything else. I have mine set so that the coax's give all the notes above 80hz and the sub gives everything below 80hz.

What you are doing is stopping the coaxs from getting the frequencies which they can't handle hence you can give it more volume.
With 8" subs you could set the crossover to about 125Hz and the same for the coaxs, this way the coaxs will give hardly any bass and you will be able to have it very loud without distortion.

When funds permit i'm planning on changing all my speakers my plan is to have, a 15" sub set to 50hz mounted free-air in the boot (so this will give the really low rumbley stuff), then fit a pair of 8's in sealed enclosures (which will be set to give between 50Hz and 150Hz - providing the punchy bass) and then a pair of components up front (which will give al, the sound from 150Hz upwards).

This should allow me to run very high volumes (if required) with very little distortion.
