How come you chose the SW5 ben? I'd have though with the sepc you outlined you would want a bit more of a lairy cam?

Or are you making it nicer during daily drives?

Hey
I chose the SW5 as it gives more low down power, so that you dont HAVE to scream the nuts off it, but still give nice top end power. I know I could have had a bigger HP figure by using the SW10 but its going to be a road car with the odd track visit, so would prefer to keep the power lower down the rpm range.

Also the cars going to be 450kg's (fingers crossed) so should go like a rocket what ever the cam :)

That's the reason I've got a sw5 in my 998 tuned engine, as i used it for a daily drive, and actually wanted to be able to creep forward in traffic jams without leaving a strip of rubber behind me!

My 998 spec (off the top of my head)
12g940 head by swiftune (pocketed & blocked)
998 standard bore (overboring is cheating!)
lightened & balanced block
omega pistons
comp clutch
duplex timing
lightened flywheel
sw5 cam
thick wall rocker shaft
modified dizzy & carb
Maniflow exhaust system 1.75", cooper freeflow manifold
80bhp at the fly, 66.2 at the wheel, 83 lb ft

It's been off the road since February, and I'm having to sell up now as I'm going to become a dad in May, but it was brilliant fun to drive and pulled like a train. Revved up to 6k, and would have probably gone further, but i was scared of blowing the thing up!

If anyone's interested, give me a pm by the way!

I know this is an old thread. I was looking for a drawing on pocketing a block. But i have to chime in here and call ******* on this one.

65 at the flywheel. Not at the wheels. No way in hell will you make 80 ay the flywheel with a sw5. You know in reality the kc500/Mg metro cam is probably a better choice.

My Spec

Ported 12g940, converted to unleaded, double valve springs
Pocketed block, standard 998, dished pistons (approx 10.5:1 CR)
Kent 276 camshaft
Hif44 carb with ITG RAM AIR KIT on minispares inlet manifold
Megajolt mappable ignition
Fletcher exhaust system
Minisport Ultralight flywheel and backplate
Verto clutch

hoping for 65 bhp atw when it gets dynoed

And YES, we do need a 998 section as they are turning into popular engines to mod

I think 55-57 ATW is a more realistic. Thats on a good head.

my original stage 1 998 was 40 atw (certified on a mini friendly RR) so with good cam, ported head, ram air kit, megajolt and hif44 I'm expecting at least 60 to be honest

40 atw must be just shy of 60 at the crank. Not a bad effort. What dyno was it, I suspect its reading high by around 10hp.

But asking for 65 ATW is around 83-85 at the crank.

With a 296 scatter cam and a full on race head i would only expect 90. My 1293 developed 118hp with a 296 and such a head. Made over 130 at baldwins.

Thus a bit of interpolation down to 998cc 90hp or 100hp at baldwins. 74 and 82 ATW

Another one for a 998 section, it would be nice to ask a small bore question without being told to buy a 1275!

To be fair, for the most part. 5 years ago that would have been realistic to say. However every 1275 that you can get for under 500 quid needs a rebuild to bring it back within tollerence.

Its a good shout I would say

The RR is one used by mini enthusiast (the RR tester was also rebuilding a race a series ther too). It has been used in the miniworld for the rolling road shootout section, I also have a friend who has used these rollers and the minisport rollers and the bhp figures where only 2 bhp different so I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of them to be fair.
