Hi,

I am nearing the end of my project - have bled the brakes and still getting no pressure. Is this a servo problem or a master cylinder? Mine appear separate in my engine bay, yet all the pictures I see are tandem ones - can anyone help. I have attached a pic of the engine (some changes have been made since the pic but basic layout the same) in case that helps - master cylinder and fluid pot at back against bulk head - servo on left against wing (or at least I think that's what it is).. :D

That is a remote servo, I can't quite see how it's plumbed in but it does look like that there's a risk of one of the pipes chaffing on the clutch cover.

They can be sods to bleed, follow the line through bleeding at the unions. If you get an old pipe union with a short length of pipe you can crimp over the pipe end and screw it in to isolate a section of the circuit so you can bled and test it - e.g. if you screwed it in to the servo outlet & got a good pedal you'd know the squidgy pedal was down to the calipers & their plumbing.

Remote servos do have a bit more pedal travel if there's no vacuum in the can to operate them so try running the engine too.

Thanks Ethel for your advice, have tried bleeding with the engine running but no different - fluid comes out of the pipes at the calipers but no pedal pressure. The car has been stood for about 5 years so no doubt something has gone...may try changing the master cylinder - your other advice sounds logical but probably beyond my humble capabilities without breaking something.

Thanks again,

Jane

Try the crimped over union trick on the master cylinder before you commit yourself to the hassle of replacing it. The servo isn't hard to service, and there's a kit available.

Really silly question, how do I crimp over a copper pipe without damaging it, or have I got the wrong end of the stick? Any step by step instructions would be good for a complete novice...that will be me!! >_<

Thank you, thank you ....

I'm also considering fitting a remote servo to a tandum 1980 system to work on the front brakes only.
