thats not a little thats a lot! i currently have a lotus exige which is going on friday. i would like a car that can do a 0-60 in under 6seconds ideally.
your best bet is to look for another car, not a mini

i have my first baby on the way so the lotus has to go to buy to cars one for her and the mini me and one fun car for me. i just cant seem to decide on either car! looking at audi a4, a5 or mit evo for her and i would like a tax exempt car for me, it will only be used 3 months a year or so and kept in a heated garage all the other time.
mini or beetle seem to be the tax exempt catergory.
i would like to get one for about £250 and whack a big engine in it. my skills are limited..... as in zero. i am a novice, but willing to get my hands dirty. ideally i would like a car quicker to 60 than my bro in laws, slk55 amg, 4.7 seconds.
open to suggestiuons!

i used to have a golf vr6 highline, that was a nice motor. i was looking at the 1.3 turbo or a bike powered mini. something a bit different.

I think you'd really struggle to get a mini doing 0-60 in under 5 seconds safely, for less than £3k. According to power/weight ratios, you'd need roughly 160 bhp at the fly (gearbox dependant too) in the mini to get you from 0-60 in under 5 second (4.9 sec). That could be done with the Rover K-Seriess VVC engine fround in the MG ZR 160, or the TF160. Im not sure whats possible with turbo-charging the A-Series. Depending on how much work you'd be willing to do yourself, you may be able to fit the k series in a mini for under £3k, but it would be a hard push. Good thing about the K is that its easy to work on, cheap to buy, nice and light (90kg), and there tends to be plenty about.
But, if it were me, id by a motorbike, can pick ones up for well under £3k that will get you from 0-60 in well under 5 seconds.

i am not a biker, dont have a license. i like a little comfort aswell as performance so that rules bikes out completely!

same engine that is in my lotus the K series. i may actually have one spare to! i am not very handy though i have to be honest. what i lack in ability i make up for in enthusiasm! if it is possible i will have a go!

if your exige was built between 2000-2004 then it will be a k-series, but not the 160 VVC, it will be the K-Series VHPD, which is a bit of a jump in spec from the 160. The VHPD produces an extra 20bhp than the 160.
If you've got a spare vhpd lying around then that would be awesome to whack in the mini...otherwise, they are really expensive.

How easy / hard would it be to get this in to a mini? what about gearbox? the Elise uses the Rover PG1 i think. As i said before i am a complete novice but have a toolset, a jack, and a haynes!

I have a 120hp elise K series engine, non VVC. when i say spare it is "potentially" quite a nice motor and can push the elise from 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds. only 33k on the clock to.

Im not actually sure how hard it would be to fit - ive never done it. although there is a convertion section on the site you could look at.
The 1.8 120 engine is nice, meant to have buckets of torque to play with. I always prefered the 1.6 with it being more revvy due to the shorter stroke and smaller crank. 1.6 VVc's are supposed to be pretty immense too, but ive never driven one unfortunately.
The gearbox you have should be fine, its really only the r65 that folk avoid fitting to the 1.8 cause they get chewed up quick with the torque.
