OK.
Back to square 1.
If you adjusted the rack and have not adjusted the steering hight sinse then everything should be alright.
You said at the start that there was a crunch and then the steering wheel turned but the wheels didn't.
Can you turn the steering wheel all the way round without the road wheels moving or is it just loose for a bit of the turn
You shoud not be able to turn it all the way if the pinch bolt (a the bottom of the column) is in place because it should lock up on the splines. There is only one place in the spigot that the bolt will fit.
Check if the pinch bolt has dropped out. If it has you might just have got away with it but I would strongly recommend that you take the column out and inspect the condition of the splines in it before just bolting it back. If they show any sgn of wear at all, it's not worth the risk. Replace it.

Unfortunately that's not 100% true any more - a lot of aftermarket racks come with a pinch-bolt groove which runs all the way round so the column can be fitted in any orientation.

the spline ive bough is like moulded in with the hole spline, on my one, it looks seperate, everythings off apart fromt he spline, cant get the bloody thing out, so tea break & g onna have another go inabit. whats the easist way to remove the spline & should the spline still spin, the bolts been taken out, & its spinning around with I turn it, surely that just tells you the teeth have gone? I just hope theyve got on the inner colum & not the rack
