I'm 17 in two days time and obviously I'm looking forward to it, but I'm also slightly nervous because I have a clubman estate and I'm worried that it won't be as much fun as a saloon... If someone can put my mind at rest I'd be grateful!

my first car was a 1985 silver mayfair. i remember driving it back thinking how different it was to my learner car. it was like a little person. i wish i still had it to be honest. i would consider buying it back if its still on the road.

Don't worry about it, best thing to do is give it a go.

Personally, i've never driven a clubby estate (would like to one day as hoping one day to own one) but feel the best way to look at it would be this:

consider the size of your clubman estate - right? now consider the size of the day-to-day estates, (saloons even!) that we see nowadays. It's still mini, and should still handle like a dream

Think of it as a go kart... but a bit longer, besides, it's not that much bigger than the saloon.

Enjoy your first drive! :-

my first car is my mini, ive been driving her round since may,
my first run was when i was still driving on the provisional. taking it to the MOT station
i didnt have any problems at all driving and it just felt right, so i was uber confident
i remember my dad at the side of me, girlfriend in the back, dropping it into second through the tunnel in town to give it some welly with the windows down
london to brighton was on the saturday of that week (MOT on the tuesday), i drove most of the way, and my dad did a few of the motorway bits that were hard to avoid on the way down there (and back).
but one of the first drives in my mini was the london to brighton, which was amazing being with all the other minis in convo and stopping other cars spoiling the fun. absolutly loved it and have not regretted a single moment of it
being a 1275 i can show the boy racers a thing or two aswell :-

Edit: already have my second aswell, awaiting funds for the rebuild. she was my birthday present from my girlfriend and was registered on my birthday in 1992, how cool?!?!

True, it's only 9.5 inches longer than a clubman saloon. And 50kg heavier.

Well I'v had mine since February but didn't drive my mini until April. I remember my first drive in my mini. I drove it home from the MOT station. I still love driving it now and it gives me such a smile. The best bit is when you go past another mini and you get a wave. You feel so cool and so geeky at the same time lol. My dad loves driving it as well and I think sometimes he brakes is own car just so he can drive my mini.

I'm pleased to hear you've discovered the enjoyment I've been trying to convince people of for many years. Compared to other cars, I feel that driving a Mini, you are a part of it, not just a 'human interface device' rattling around inside it. It has the feel of a racing car before you even modify it.

Well one morning when his car wouldn't start and he even had the recovery out to try and fix it he ask if he could borrow my car. So I went in and got my keys and on one of the coldest days ever my 27 year old mini started first time and his newish Renault scenic would'nt even turn over. :) Even the recovery man was laughing and I still mock him about it telling him he should buy a more reliable car. :-

Do you think they're noticablly different handling-wise to the saloon?
