I kept up with my mates 1.1 saxo easily enough and easy trashed it on the lanes.
Apart from a few ignition problems, mine was bombproof.

If your looking for an easy project yes go large bore, but if you want to actually build an engine.. go small bore.
Also its going in a 450kg fully built shell... id like to see a modern day car keep up with me

Ben
Also.... this forum needs a 998 section.. they have one on Turbo Mini's

whats the spec on that one mate?I know Iv said it before in other topics, and I couldnt agree more with Liirge and Reece, small bore is the way forward. Im building a Fast road 998 with Swiftune at the moment and swiftune are backing me all the way, and we're aiming for 90bhp. Yes I could get more outright power from a large bore.. but is the BHP figure all its about? or is it more about the power delievery? I have a daily drive of a 85bhp 1330, and yes it fun but how many other people have that exact same spec!?

_Those are good points Ben, seems like so many people forgot drivability, weight distribution etc.. and are just following the statement 'bigger is power', which isnt actually correct..Most people nowdays is looking for 1380s, but power isnt everything, and a car has to cope with the use the owner makes of it.

whats the spec on that one mate?
The spec is:
998cc Block + 0.40'' Pocketed
compression ratio of 10.5 to 1
AE +0.40'' pistons press fit
Swiftune 12G940 stage 3 head
3.4 ratio final drive
hardened diff pin
wedged & backdrilled Crank
lightened rods
Weber DCOE45 using one side (Mini7 spec)
Swiftune SW5-07 cam
Swiftune timing gears
Swiftune Straight cut roller drop gears 1:1
Titan 1.3 ratio Roller Rockers
Swiftune ultralite pre-verto flywheel
Ultralite billet Swiftune back plate
Orange diaphragm
Maniflow se7en's manifold
Maniflow stage 2 LCB
Carbon 4 blade Fan
Lightened ISKY cam followers
PoleStar engine management system

Thanks very much... exactly, bigger isnt always better, Iv seen so many less powerful cars out-performing bigger powered cars simply because of the drivability... and then it comes down to car setup... but this thread isnt about the setup just the engine.
So yes, 998 you can get around 100bhp without going turbo.

That's a nice spec you have there, where did you get the Carbon fan from? this is an area I've been looking at trying to save the Horsepower loss from.

It just needs members with manners who are willing to let a thread about 998s remain as a thread about 998s without jumping all over it. The same goes for threads about autoboxes, certain members stick their oar in every time and start shouting 'ditch it, get a manual'.
