The oilway drillings have baby core plugs, you can see 2 just above the transfer casing. Pistons look ok, do some adding up you could easily equal the cost of buying an engine or short motor - Minispares have brand new MPI lumps for £400, just add megajolt . I'd put big end nuts 'n bolts on the essential list with the oil pump.

The head will need machining to take hardened seats. I wouldn't bother as it'd be relatively easy to do later, ideally while cutting triple angle seats and fitting new guides.

To be honest, by the time you have bought all that stuff, had the block bored, crank ground etc you will be very close to the cost of a recon engine.

I did the same job as you over last winter- MG Metro block and head, bored +.060 with 21253 pistons, HIF44, MG Metro cam etc, etc. By the time I had also bought a new 2-core rad, alternator, oil pump, water pump, clutch etc I was well over £1000, and that was doing most of the work myself. I am really happy with the outcome but looking back it would have been cheaper to buy a short block kit and go that route. I just didn't realise that at the start!

Don't forget cam bearings and followers (if pitted). Re unleaded, I just add some additive every now and again and run it on 99Ron. Seems to love it!

Good luck!

disaster, more decisions to make now regarding the spiraling costs! I am planning on doing the nissan micra engine transplant at some point in the future, maybe it's best to go straight down that root now?

Depends on the state of your 998! For not much dosh you can spice that up (if need be) or just live with it and save the cash for the Micra transplant. If you are going to do another engine change in a little while it would seem less hassle. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with my 1330, but I'm not planning to replace it any time soon!

How much will the Micra engine job cost??

Hey guys,

So i am upgrading from my 998 engine to a mg metro 1275 i have aquired. This is my shopping list of things to get to do it, tools as well as parts! Hopefully i can get some opinions and advice on parts to use, and make sure i buy everything i need in one bulk lot!

Decision:

rebore (+60)
regrind crank

Tools:
Piston Ring Compressor
Valve spring compressor

Parts:
Fuel Pump - use the one from my 998
Water pump
Carb (i already have some twin hs2s?)
Exhaust/manifold(what bits can i use from my current 998 maniflow exhaust?)
Gaskets
Piston Rings
Big Ends
Main Bearings
Valves - will use old ones in there and lap them to new seats
Valve Springs - new ones needed?
Hardened Valve seats (to convert to unleaded)
Silicon hoses
Oil Pump
valve stem seals

Thanks guys
Ian

Apologies to those that have already poted, I haven't read all of them - Ian, it may be worth you getting hold of at least one recent issue of Mini Mag where I have covered an engine re-buils, what is likely to be needed and the parts list/prices (issue 165). The next issue (166) coevrs alretnative parts to up-grade the engone, then sorting the head out (issue 167) and finally what happens when you strap a set of 1.5 rockers on your standard engine (issue 168). Alternatively grab a copy of my CD 'Mini Expert: Issue 1' from my website - fulley engine buikld how to on their and some otions for up-grading the engine. Also covers hearbox and clutch. Is this a shameless punt? Not really - haven't seen this information anywhere else. KC
