Hi all,

After 20 years in the wilderness I have bought my 1st Mini.

Having owned a 1976 1000 and a 1967 998 (which I really should have kept) I am the proud owner of a 1981 1000 HL..in need of some TLC of course.

So expect some questions in the near future!!!

No time like the present...

I know Austin/BL/Rover (whatever they were called then) were doing some strange combinations of engines/gearboxes around 1980 so my first query is what kind of engine combination do I have?

The engine number is 99H791PZ 45090...is it A or A+ ?

The gearbox has the number DAM 4818 cast onto the front..any ideas on this?

All help gratefully accepted.

Can't wait to start chopping out that rust!!!

Cheers

I think the 99H79's are still an A series rather than A+.

The casing part number is less relavent as there are a multidude which are all basically the same.

Easy way to check whether it's an A+ or A is the fixing of the distributor... If it's held in with a forked clamp and a bolt into the block by the dipstick then it's an A+.

*edit*

Ohh PS... Welocome back, I think we all take a break from the little beggers at one time or another, I know I did for about 10 years.... but sometimes the draw is too much and you end up finding one... ( or two, or three or ...... etc ) :) ;) :cheese:

Thanks for the speedy reply guys!

I will check out the dizzy clamp when I get home tonight.

You are right, the draw was too much after all these years but the time is now right...the kids are older..I have a nice uncluttered garage and more importantly...some spare time!!!

Soon as I get organised I will post some progress piccies.

Cheers for the encouragement...will probably need it.

By the way...

When I bought the car there was a box of bits in the boot which included two carbs.

I have identified one as an SU HI 44 (Metro I guess). Could I use this on the mini once it has had a rebuild with new seals etc?

Thi HIF44 is generally used on 1275's (little too big for the 998) which will probably be you next adventure after you've had a play with the 998 :cheese:

You'll find loads of stuff on here, and may I also plug the TMF_CD, which has all the Mini Manuals, and more importantly when trying to identify parts, both the Minispares and MOSS catalogs on there which use many of the original part numbers and are a very useful resource for exploded diagrams of how bits stick together... :cheese:

Well not exactly charity but 3-50 of the fiver go directly to funding the hosting of the forum. The rest covers P&P, paypal fees and production...

that reminds me JG, I still have a cd which doesn't work on my computer! I must return it back to you to sell, could you PM me your address?

Welcome to TMF Fish Lord, its good to see someone getting back into Mini's! I had a small break from mine when it was in the garage (I closed the door and ignored it for a few months), but I couldn't keep away for long  (And the TMF-CD is great, well worth the buy!)

TMF CD excellent value for money. Even has games on it for when you get board.
