Model: Mini Cooper 1.3i
Year: 1996
Description of problem : I got my mini back last wednesday after having to pay £230 in welding to get it though it's MOT . I drove it 200 miles home Friday and the whole time I was on the motor way which is the majority of the journey, when i got to the toll road booth, as i pulled up tp pay both his warning lights came, his revs dropped and his engine cut out. Eventually after a few tries I got him started back up. He did this a few times, in the end I called out the AA. The AA guy only took off the air filter and just had a poke around but said he couldnt see anything wrong with it. Anyway, I was able to drive him home and didn't have any problems again, he also ran fine all of Saturday. Sunday he started playing up again but when he cut out he was much easier to start back up, after I left him to sit a while he was okay and I was able to get him back home. Once again Monday, he drive fine up the motorway it was only when I got off the motorway and came to stop at the round about he droppped in revs again and cut out.
Just wondering if anyone can throw any light on the situation or has any ideas as both me and my boyfriend who are both mini owners are drawing a blank.
I never suffered and problems with my mini before (bar the welding), it's had a new dizzy cap, arm, and plugs recently.

Any help will be much appreciated,
Thank you,
Sophie
xx.

Check first if lambda sensor is working correctly and the vacuum pipes are connected and in good conditions.
Strange cut out issues can be caused also by a faulty air temp switch, reading cold all the time, it will make your engine run rich all the time till it cuts out for overfuelling..
Would be worth a look at this thread about SPi issues:

One of my Minis used to cut out after motorway runs. It turned out to be the carb sticking (carb icing) changing the K&N air filter for a standard one fixed it.

I would say to look carefully at the red vaccum pipe thats goes from the airbox (on the bottom) to the back of the injector, mine cut out when it came to a stop and noticed that the red pipe had split, replaced it and it was fine after. Check the rest of the small pipes aswell, one going to ecu from a little black box next to the injector on the left, and one going from the fuel trap (black box) to the back of the injector.

I would say to have the lambda checked aswell but if it recently passed an mot then it wont be faulty (would of failed emissions).

Paul.
