Guys calm down, my first passenger will more than likely be someone I don't like  you know, just incase things go wrong on the first corner and the frame falls apart! :(

You will have to sign a disclaimer though beforehand, don't worry, its nothing really, honest :-

As for today, it was time to remove the engine - hopefully for the last time!

Posted Image

In my own unique special way obviously :D I've got this down to a tee now!

Posted Image

I threw some paint on the frame where I've cut it, and also I made a small cut out on the front bar and welded in a new plate so there should be no issues with the exhaust manifold banging against it, it really is that tight! :(

I cleaned up the garage after as with all the cutting and welding thats been going on lately it got crud everywhere and I hate working in messy areas, I also picked up a new workbench you can just see tucked away in the corner in the pic above

Believe me this thing is godsend as before I used whatever I could find that was a flat surface to work on be it an offcut off a kitchen worktop placed on a freezer as so

Posted Image

which wobbled! or the floor! How the hell I managed to do the first build and put up with such mickey mouse work areas I don't know????? But you get by!

So yeah, its nice to actually sit down at a bench now! :D

My neatness will come in handy though when I rebuild the engine

Yeah T&R alex, I'll let you know near the time but it may be some time away as........I might be changing the engine AGAIN now!

Gonna look at another one later on in the week, if its a no go then the type-r will go in as planned

Its nothing new in the vtec mini world, but I'm keeping it under wraps incase it don't happen, will know in a few days

That way if the new one don't happen then its no big deal and the type-r will go in as planned

I'm getting a bit cheesed off with myself as I can't make my mind up what I want, but I've had my beady eye on this one for a bit of time, just been reading up on it etc etc

Wish I could join your "That'll do engineering club! " :)

Right, new engine is here :D I've picked up a 2.0!

The 1.8 type-r aint gonna be going in, I need to stick to a plan and try to stick to it! I've had enough of changing my plans, my changes are costing me money! If I had just changed the damm clutch on the B16 back in the day............life would be so much simpler! So I will be sticking with this new engine - I promise! :D

Ok, its a B20b, I picked up the bottom end only, sorry if you know all the specs/conversion guide for this engine already, but its for the people that don't

Posted Image

Its from a CRV up until about '01, they had a B20b and B20z, the later ones (z) were a little higher compression so theres only around 20hp or so in it, piston size is 84mm also these engines are NON vtec, what that means is they have no vtec, simple right :D

Book figures are about 126 hp with 133 lbft torque, later z was 146 hp but same torque, my B16 torque on the rollers came in at 116 lbft and a standard 1.8 type-r is also 133 lbft

So your probably thinking why not just bore and sleeve the standard 81mm 1.8 type-r block to 84mm 2.0? Two reasons

First - I can sell the type-r bottom end easy as it is complete, boring it out to 2.0 won't help here
Second - I want something different, a real sleeper look, anyone can chuck a vtec engine in a mini and put there standard steel wheels back on if they wish, thats basically my car so to me it don't have anything wow on it, I think a 2.0 should do it!

Standard pistons on these are flat, CR is around 9:6, standard 1.8 type-r is 11:1

Posted Image

Posted Image

One thing that did concern me was the crank pulley - its fuggin mahoooooosive on the B20 compared with my B16/B18 one!

Posted Image

Posted Image

As I'm using the DTA kit with a crank sensor this mofo aint gonna fit! so I'm gonna put my B16 pulley on, will check first but I don't think it should affect the balance of the crank or anything having a different one on?

As I mentioned earlier I will be sticking with this engine? Why? Well I did a lucky dip in a hat earlier, B16 B18 or B20.....

Posted Image

......and B20 came out, so thats then! :)

Ok, the science bit, for those that know about the conversion please feel free to go about as you were, for the others please read on......

The blocks appear to be the same for the B18 and B20, deck height is coming in about 273mm on both, B16 is 270mm, I think maybe the crank and con rods are different on the B20 compared to the B18, the B18 has a crank girdle which I don't think the B20 has, either way I will be keeping the B20 crank and rods and just uprating the pistons to 84.5mm, the piston will be the same design as the integra type-r so a P73-OO dome, this should hopefully bump up the CR to just over 11, the B20 con rods will be shot peened

The reason for the bump in compression is because I want to bolt my type-r head on this and make use of the standard type-r cam, infact the whole head as it is will be going on, BUT this doesn't mean I can rev it to 8600rpm , the crv redlines at around 6800, I will be bouncing off at 8k max, which is handy if your using a standard mini rev counter! :D

Ok, vtec (yo!)

Bolting on a vtec head on a B20 block which doesn't have VTEC is known as a frankenstein motor, if you have ever heard that phrase towards hondas this is what they mean, I admit I don't totally understand how vtec works, infact I don't really care? I work on the other end of the engine - the pedal!

Either way, it works off oil pressure, the B18 has an oil gallery on the block which goes into the underside of the head, the B20 don't have this on its block

Posted Image

You can see here how they drill and plug the holes which bypass the coolant lines to get the oil flow from the block to the VTEC solenoid which controls the oil to the exhaust cam

Posted Image

The underside showing the hole to the block

Posted Image

As the B20 don't have an oil feed through the block you need to use a tee piece to get the feed from the oil pressure switch.....

Posted Image

........via a pipe to the external feed point in the picture somewhere up there ^^^^

That external feed point hole in the head is plugged up, so take out the plug and the tee piece feed pipe will go into this and hey presto! a 2.0 vtec engine! simples!

The hole on the bottom of the head and the top of the block both need to be plugged up otherwise you may find a bit of oil on the floor! :P

ALL the above info is on the interweb, the B20vtec conversions have been going on for some time, out friends across the pond have been chucking them into whatever hondas they can with some good results. I only went into detail on here for the guys who haven't heard of it or wondered why I was looking to put a 126 hp engine instead of a type-r :D

Theres other factors here which I'm still looking into but its looking like a green light at the mo', infact it is going ahead. I only came across this "frankenstein" build whilst looking into boring my 1.8 out to a 2.0, I just wanted something different in the mini, I'm sure B20's have been done in minis before but I can't find any standard length allspeed ones? Add steel wheels to that! :techsupport:

Ok, power wise? Not sure? Not that bothered about peak hp but torque increase would be nice, we all know hondas are torqueless but revving to 8k and beyond makes up for that! My setup will be more than likely as follows:

B20 block rebored and honed to 84.5 within standard sleeve
84.5 standard cast P73 pistons
OEM or ACL bearings
B20 crank balanced
Type-r head with possible bowl blend
Vtec conversion kit

I would guess around 180 hp with 140 lbft torque, revving to 8k max through my steel wheels, obviously the figures might be all over the place, but it will need to be mapped so I'll let the guys do there stuff, I'm just there to watch :P

Away from the B20 shenanigans, I've completely stripped the type-r head

Posted Image

And got some red dot rubbers!

Posted Image

The mini will be going back to its roots - donuts! The coil conversion springs were good but only when I still had the a-series, they seemed a bit out of there depth when the honda first went in, hopefully these will hold up better

I've got a buyer for my B16 engine (only dry fitted together) and one for the type-r, I need to recoup some figures here my end........just remember kids......engine conversions can get expensive! :)

Hopefully "Kams torqueless wonder" should restore the smile to my face :D

right, we need some sort of deal here.

If you change your mind again you have to give us something...

Short of that, looking good, im very confused, which engine is which, dont build the wrong one up, and when can i have a go?

Was gonna say let me know how it handles with the red dot rubbers, but mine could end up being done before yours :techsupport:

Kam you sure you dont want to change your mind and go with the D16z6 conversion? 126bhp sohc vtec :L with a nice turbo setup could see figures of about 250bhp on standard internals :L
