I am planning on fitting one of these relays:

http://www.fiestagui...ight_delay.html

picked it up from eBay for under £5 posted with the interior light too. Cambiker-is that the same one you have used? Where did you put it?

Sorry for the delay, looks the same a mine, and i cable tied it to the bottom of the dash near the pedal assembly

Couldn't you just fit a fat capacitor in parallel to the circuit?

Then, the light should gently fade nicely once you'd left the car...

wondering if you can help me with this..

i understand connecting it all up apart from connection 31L and 31S on the relay.

for the 31S connection (to the drivers door switch.) is that saying that i should disconnect the purple with white tracer (thinking on the mini here) and add a cable from 31s on the relay to go to the door switch. and then a cable from 31L on the relay to go to the cable removed from the door switch (purple with white tracer)

Hope that makes sense

thanks in advance.

I would expect you put the relay in series - put the wire from the door switch to the light terminal and connect the switch to the switch terminal instead.

Capacitor would need a bit of a redesign as the door switch is to earth

what I have done is cut into the purple & white wire behind the dash (unravelled some of the loom tape around the air vent to find the wire) then attached the end that goes to the light to pin 31L and the other to 31S

its working well now!

So does that purple and white wire have to be disconnected from the door switch? or just spliced into?

i left the door switch alone. opened up the loom tape around the air vent found the purple and white wire and cut it. now the two ends will be going in seperate directions-one back towawds the back of the dash area that meets up with the drivers side purple/white wire (connect this to the 's') and one that goes back ito the loom tape towards the a pillar (connect this to 'l').

is that better?

where did you get your relay from?

i've looked in all the scrap yards round here and found nothing on the fiestas that looks like the timer relay.

...late to the party! you could do that (16-25v very high capacitance, maybe even 1F) ...or use smaller caps and change the standard bulb for a set of ultrabrite LEDs (solder 6 in series (2.2v x 6 = 13.2v)) that will work, because i've done it in the past.

Start off with getting the parts you need, the relay on the mk4 Fiesta and mk5 onwards Escort,
fuse box is directly connected to it, so simply pull out the fuse and take it (Pay for it),
oh it's a big yellow one with red writing on it with 5 pins on the bottom.

that reads that they're in mk4 fiestas too?

can i ask what you typed into ebay to find it? (sounding really dumb now, but i've put the various codes in and 'ford timer relay' etc)

thanks

I've remembered one source for the small cylindrical timer relay I mentioned,

Halfway down this page.
