Hi. Loads of people go the "rattle can" way. It, like everything else, is all about good preparation. Do the rub down, prime it, use stoppers and rub flat, then RATTLE away. Leave it to harden PROPERLY then flat back and polish!

i see what you mean but i think i havent explained very well haha. The bubbling paint has now blistered up and i have holes in some of my paintwork not in the panels them selves  so i should be okay as long a prep very well? Thats good then. I just wanted to know incase i started to do it and it goes pete tong then it would look worse then before. Il start a new topic with pictures when i get round to doing it this thursday n friday let me know what you think

You can get fantastic results with spray cans, it is all down to your skill level.

When you rub the rust down, make sure you get through to clean metal, dont just fill/paint over the rust as it will become worse.

Once the metal is clean, coat it with somethign like por15 metal ready as that will treat the rust rather than cover it up like alot of the rust remedies do.

like everybody has said its all down to prepwork, i would also allow about 2 or 3 cans per panel by the time you have rubbed back etc, but key to a good finish is to warm up the can and the panel, i used to use a hair dryer, but by god ive seen naff ones that have been painted with rattle cans but also seen good ones.

but......all you need is time and patience, good luck buddy

Dont use an hiar drier with rattle cans, paint wont dry correctly, causing cracking and bubbling.
Good prep work is everything, and a bar coat would be helpful in order to avoid paitn reaction or any sort of reticulation when painting with cans.

Prep the area. And if you're cheap like me, use spray cans. I did this to my 1988 CRX. Flat black and it came out decent.

The prep is so important, but with cans be prepared to spend much more time on polishing etc.

You can get fantastic (if less durable) results.

I think you can get pretty good results with rattle cans....

Proof is in the pudding.... lol I painted my entire car (other than roof) with Halfords BRG rattle cans. I could have done a better job if i'd had more time, I learned a lot while painting.

I recommend buying a plasticote clip on spraygun trigger. Stops you spray painting your fingertips, also reduces runs and splutters from differences in pressure as you press the button down.

Matt, you can spray at my place if you want? Get the paint from either Jawels or Brighton Paint Supplies....They're both pretty good. For everything, 2xlts poly base coat, 2xltrs primer, 5xlt lacquer kit (I need this much because I'm adding metal flake to the top 3/4 coats), 5xlts thinners and 10x sheets of 2000grade wet n dry it's costing £185.00. Not a bad deal!!!
