Just thought of this...

Instead of asking about the obvious things to check for a pass

How about I ask about the failures..

So here goes, might end up a succesfull thread with any luck

What silly little things has your mini been failed on in an MOT?

Could you also post the year of you car, and if its modified.

Thanks loads

Scott

Just going through some old MoT failure sheets...

One of mine once failed because the washer bottle was empty!

Mine was once failed by a total numpty of an MOT inspector who reckoned the A032R's weren't a road legal tyre and also that the way the front seats folded forwards was dangerous

I took great delight in returning for the retest having done nothing to the car except for gathering evidence to prove he was a knob. It worked. :)

Not a Mini - but a few years ago when I lived in the UK, I had a car failed on a cracked numberplate

Having had a "What?!?" moment, I pointed out to the inspector that the MOT was there to ensure that the car was safe. He proceeded to tell me that the car was unsafe because pieces of broken numberplate could fly off and hurt somebody. :)

In Northern Ireland you will fail at the Government run test centeres if:-

You number plate isn't big enough,
If it is cracked or watermarked.

You will fail if you have a sunstrip on your windscreen.
Fail if you have darkened front windows (side as well as windscreen) (No pimp mobiles here)

Rollers that test your brakes also test bias so not only do they both, (front and back), have to work but work evenly.
Tons of other wee things they have added on to get retests.
The last car I had on their lift I swore they were going to pull the tyres off the rims as the special plates they sit on are able to strech your car in different directions to try to get your ball joints popping!

It is also now illegal not to dispay your MOT disc on your windscreen.

If you buy a car with a NI MOT you can be sure it has withstood the rigours of being to hell and back.

"excessive corrosion to drivers' floorpan". This corrosion was actually a drainhole where the plug had fallen out, and was a bit brown round the edges. The garage then proceeded to charge me £90 to weld up this tiny hole, but didnt disconnect any electrics so destroyed the alternator, headlamp relay, stereo, indicator flasher unit and 4 coils. Gits.
