innocenti cooper engines (same units fitted to the morris 1300GT) were black, early bmc engines were green, later austin/rover engines were red (1275) or yellow (998), factory reconditioned units were gold.
I guess 1275gt engines were black, but sure on this, first of all you need to know if your is the original engine..
Try to find out what your engine number says using an engine n. translator like this:

BMC engines were green.
BL engines were black.
A+ 998s were yellow.
A+ 1275s were red.

hi may sound very stiupid but where is the engine number..? i was looking today and i thought it was on the right of the block...but theres nothing there..? could it mean its been skimmed or polished off?

i did find some other numbers on the back of the block though if anybody knows what they are... 1279 12G 29H and when i took off the oil filler cap there was 12C940 (could have been G?)

thanks :withstupid:

It should be in front of the head, right hand side. It would have been 12G940 which is a 1275 head. Sounds to me like youve got a yellow 1275 lol. It isnt uncommon for the engine numbers to be grinded off in cases such as a 1275 replacing a 998 without notifying the insurance.

So far as I know

850 - Green
998 - Yellow
1098 - Black
1275 - Red

Recons - Gold.

Just because it sounds good doesn't make it right! The list I gave is accurate. Recons can be silver, gold, black, blue or any other colour.

The recons I was refering to was the Goldseal engine. As in the gold ones? Engine codes usually consist of LBB or somwthing similar.

And my list may not be accurate, hence why I stated 'so far as i know'

My list is literally what I have seen. I've never seen a black 998 or a green one (as in painted standard) so it doesnt go on my list. Simples.

the Mrs however has a pink and white MG metro lump.... shexy!
