I'm glad this question has been asked as I've been meaning to do so for ages! My 64 mk1 on 10" wheels does indeed read 4000rpm at 60mph. This is obviously pretty frantic at open road speeds. What would be a better diff to go for and whats involved in changing it? Its a stage one tuned A+ with remote type gearbox by the way and has plenty of grunt to handle higher gearing though obviously this would compromise acceleration.
Hi mister bridger,
I'm pretty sure that the pommie,,,, errr, sorry English Coopers got the same diff's our's did... thats a 3.44:1 diff. Its a pretty good all rounder normally.
You've said there that your engine is a "stage on tuned A+",,, I'm not to sure what kind of mods are done to "stage one motors" normally, but if like my motor you're running any kind of wild(er) cam, you MAY find that going to a taller diff might make it very very slugish of the mark. Obviously going to a taller diff with even a standard cam will have an impact on acceleration, but that impact might be multipled when you're running any kind of hot cam... yes at higher rpm the engine will no doubt have the torque and power needed to make the car haul arse,, but while it is off the cam, the lack of torque is more noticeable for longer (or at least thats what I'm finding).
Has anyone else found this?
Thanks for all the replies too by the way
