Hi Mike,
I have attached the wiring diagram - i believe this is an RVI type (should say RVI somewhere on the face of the gauge) - be aware: THIS TYPE WILL NOT WORK WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION (only the old style points system). For electronic ignition, you would be better with a RVC type.

The car is currently undergoing a 1.6 C16SE Vauxhall engine transplant (nearly complete WOOP!!) .
Are we saying that this gauge is incompatible with the vauxhall engine management system? If so, what are these worth on Ebay?

Hi Mike,
Yes, the gauge will be incompatible with the vauxhall electronic ignition, however from cambiker71's link, it appears speedycables can adapt the gauge for you, or you could just buy a RVC type.

The conversion has to include replacing all the electronics inside the gauge. Therefore, it's not very economical except on gauges that are OEM, in great shape, and period correct.
No offense intended, but the gauge you have is rather rusty (and I assume untested) and the pictures of the back show mounting studs without the brackets. Therefore, it's not worth too much its current condition. Still, you will find a buyer for it on eBay. The later RVC type gauges mentioned above probably will work with your engine, but I don't know for sure as I don't know what type of signal comes out of the ECU.

The gauge is complete and works fully, its the old gauge that came from the car when it had the A Series fitted. However, it does have a little surface rust which im sure will clean off with a little wire wool.
I'll give speedycables a call next week to get a price, otherwise there will be a massive hole in my dashboard!

Please follow up and tell us what Speedy Cables quotes for the conversion. I know it will not be cheap. It will be very helpful to others in the future to know what is involved and roughly how much it costs.
That surface rust will indeed come off. I'm fortunate enough to have a blast cabinet at work. I typically disassemble old gauges, media blast their cases, repaint them inside and out, and reassemble them. The end results do look good and a cleaned up gauge will be a lot easier to sell than one that is rusty... even though the rust has absolutely nothing to do with how functional the gauge is.
FWIW, Caerbont (the current owner of the Smiths trademark) sells a line of classic gauges to keep that "period correct" look. However, the gauge movements are modern. I believe Mini Spares sells these modern gauges. Surely other vendors do as well. I'm sure if you contact Caerbont through their web site ( http://www.caigauge.com ) they will be able to provide contact information for local distributors. It would be interesting to know how the price of a converted gauge from Speedy Cables compares to a new Caerbont/Smiths gauge.
