you really need to comfirm its the head gasket before ripping it apart. Do you have or know anyone that you can borrow a compression tester off?

best way to check if its a blown gasket it to start it up and take each ht lead off one at a time...the engine SHOULD drop in power with each one...however if the gasket is blown, 2 of the cylinders will not be affected much. (usually 2&3).

its not too much hassle to take the head of anyway... i changed a gasket at imm in the campsite, took a few hours to take it off, give the head and block a good clean, fit the new gasket and head, torque it up and fire it up. easy peasy

Ive not been able to test which cylinder isn't firing as of yet because i cant keep the bugger running without my foot on the pedal. Just as you think its gunna keep running you get out to the front put one hand on the Ht lead and glug glug glug its died again.

Ok i can ask my mini buddy across the road if they have a compression tester as they have alot more space and tools. If it does turn out to be the gasket i maybe able to grovel to them and let me use their garage and wide aray of gadgets and gizmos. Would a blown gasket explain why it sounds so much louder now on one of the cylinders?

Just so i dont end up doing something rediculous and ruining my engine whilst its apart could you give me a basic outline on what to remember. I've done a head gasket before but was on an engine on a stand at college about a year ago now so just a couple of reminders would help dearly.

I took a trip over to my mini buddy to see if i could get my hands on a compression tester and unfortunately i couldn't. So im without a tester, pretty sure the head gasket is gone, any other symptoms that would lead to it definately being the gasket before i start tearing my minis poorly little heart?

How severe would a crack in the dizzy cap be because there is a slight mark on the inside, it doesn't look like a crack but what i can only describe as very slight corrosion 1mm to 2mm deep. Anyone shed anymore light?

Anyone able to shed anymore light? Cant get hold of a compression tester possible day to do it anyway even if the head gasket isn't gone its all experience taking my engine apart.

Also any other things I should look into doing as i have the engine in bits and havn't done much maintenance since i brought her. Bearing in mind i'm a student with little amount of cash prior to new years eve and christmas. Im thinking along the lines of port and polishing type jobs.

I've got this problem I'm not firing in 3+4 (closest to the thermostat) be changed the exhaust gasket, spark plugs, going to Change the ht leads I have zero spark or from what I can tell. I'll let you know if I fix it but if not I'll be looking to get a compression test.
