The 100mm is between the centers of the bulbs.

Incorrect, 100mm between the "Light emmiting surfaces" which is the lense, and still, if you get a ruler out you will still find it's 100mm.

Here's an FAQ on fog lights.. Rear Fog Light, The legislation

Binge, you will also have to swap over the bulb holdes, as the second one down is a double ( brake and rear ) where as the top is a single connection...

Also you will have to make sure the lenses show red and amber correctly, also don't be surprised if Mr MOT gets confused... and 9 times out of 10; confusion = fail

fog light in revese is not a mot fail,

also if anyone wants to know how to do that conversion i have done a excerlant guide how to do it, it was posted in general chat a couple of months ago so dig through to find it, ir check out the tech articles on MF as its on there,

edit - see tech article, at the bottom is a bit about the MOT, the most you can get is an advise as it is not adversely affected by the operation of any other lamp. my fog light is a lot brighter than the top lamps and the stop lamps are behind a red lense anyway.

Yes you can, but be careful. Make sure it's pointing accurately toward the rear or the beam spread will be wrong. And although you can fit a rear fog lamp on the centreline of the car, you'll probably fail the MOT if it's in the middle of the parcel shelf as the tester will say it would get confused with a brake light by following traffic (as in a traffic jam the driver behind would watch that instead of your brake lamps and crash into you). The same would apply if you fitted a matched pair of fog lamps to the shelf. You also won't be able to put stickers on the screen behind it for obvious reasons and will need to keep the screen clean as you do with lamp lenses.

Quite correct, it's not an MOT fail as position of the fog lamp is not part of the MOT check, just the same as wheels sticking out beyond the wheel arches and a number of other things which could be mentioned...

But, they are illegal... therefore subject to harsher treatment

Why not just get rid of it altogether? I'm sure, from past experiance of mot'ing, if you dont have one fitted and theres no switch it cant be failed on an mot as its not there.
