I'll just say WARNING / CAUTION here.

Do it by all means, but make very sure the battery is 150% secure and is well covered with something that will not dislodge, even consider a double up here, so if one cover does become dislodged, they other isn't.

I know and admit this is likely over the top, but personally and having seen loads of Minis over the years lost to fire from this, I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

I do like the twin tanks and have always run with them.

I just spent the additional and fitted the additional RH tank when I bought my mini. Wanted to take it on a trip around Europe over my first summer and was worth it...on roads that you don't know and not having to worry about finding a petrol station. The tank and fitting kit is available from Minispares.

Thanks for all of your thoughts.

I think for the time being I’ll be safer keeping it in the cabin for long journeys.

The idea of a Jerry can bouncing around in the boot and potentially leaking when there’s electrical wiring doesn’t fill me with confidence!

I can't say the idea of 20 odd litres of fuel in the cabin sounds like a bundle of fun, and I'm not sure if it's even legal

I meant a green 5l can which I mentioned earlier. A steel 20l one would probably be safer though!

It might cause a small loss in MPG, but have you considered fitting a roof rack? Plenty of space for fuel and a second spare wheel.

With a roof rack you lose a huge amount of performance and a big increase in fuel consumption. Added to which, the higher C of G rather increases the body roll.

Personally I don't like spare petrol carried in loose cans either in the boot or inside the car. Just fit fuel tanks to give the required range and don't take any chances.

Wish I could easily increase the fuel capacity of my clubman estate... :(

I drove all the way to Mongolia last year with two other people, a roof rack and all our stuff on board (camping gear, tools, two spare tyres, etc, etc)

We had two 5 gallon fuel cans with us and only had to resort to using them once. That was when we were in Mongolia so Europe shouldn't be an issue.

I took us about 10 tanks of fuel to get to Kiev.
