lol, ive been researching and have read all different things, one site was even suggesting the noise is through loss of energy???? but isnt the purpose of straight cut gears to reduce power loss???

My 1293 'S' did 30 rallies with a SC gearbox and standard helical drop gears. It then stripped the transfer gear so I fitted straight-cut ones. I find the noise so intrusive and unpleasant I'm going to take the SC drops out and replace them with new standard helical ones again. The SC box is not too bad and I need the close ratios to keep it on the cam, but the SC drops mean I have to wear earplugs on the road (helmet keeps the noise down in competition).

I am guessing that this is a fully fledged rally car and as such you don't have a great deal of sound deadening :-

If on the other habd you have a decent level of sound deadening then normally it is not so load...... well in my case it's not so bad, maybe I should get my ears tested :(

so if i went with a sc box and added plenty of sound deadning would it be driveable everyday, and occasionally on motorway?

I mean how thick is your deadning in yor mini Mra-minis?

I use mine as a daily too... although that is with a 3.1 diff which tames it a bit...

the missus will quite happily got to sleep in it on long journeys, (and short ones)
