If no lift pin - use the thin screwdriver blade I mentioned earlier! That's why I mentioned it!!!!!!!

cool, and the timing has been set as per haynes with a timing light!

Timing set 'as Haynes' ??? Presumably - by the 'professional'!!!!!!!!!!!! :geek: :D
You should set the timing by advancing it until it pinks - then retard it very slightly so it 'doesn't quite' pink. It's then optimised for your engine - within the limits of the advance curve in your dizzy of course. Make sure the vacuum advance is working ! Without it - the engine will be 'dull'.

i will double check the timing, though i usually use a vacuum gauge to check timing/mixture
