well its the engine out of ernie (red one in picture) which sadly i rolled a couple of times, ouch. When it was in the car it was a 1330 with a stage 2ish head and a kent 276 cam, which was great but in my opinion come onto cam too low for my liking, so i have it in bits and am fitting a kent 296 cam to it. I will be taking the crank, rods and pistons to be lightened, balanced etc, and am changing the diff ratio to something a tad more revvy.

awww shame a bout rolleing it :D nice sounds good i got all mine lightend and balanced :- yer i went for a 286 in mine good cam comes in at 3500 and goes like rocket :) what rev range does the 296 come in at ??

i think they say its suppose to come in at 3250, the 310s suppose to come in at something like 4k,lol but they said the 276 was suppose to come in at 1500? But mine didnt seem to come in till about 3k, the kent cams catalogues at work, so apologies if i got some rpms wrong so will just have to see what happens, lol, if you go to my profile theirs a link to photobucket, with poor ernie on, and my new one.

Ill be using the straight cut drop gears out of the black ones current engine, big grin.

poor ernies crash was the result of a ball joint failing at 60 +mph, it just pulled over to the left really violently, i tried to correct it, but it just span, hit a bank backwards, and went front over back twice, according to witnesses, it stopped rolling, ended up upside down, i kicked the door open and somehow managed to crawl out unhurt! which ill never understand, air ambulance landed in the same field i ended up in, and asked me where the driver was, shouldve seen the look on their faces when i said it was me, i noticed a couple of days later that the seatbelt had broke as well... Pretty scary, hence why im running harnesses in the black one, and soon a cage

quite alright, had a similar issue earlier regarding cam followers, and the spec engine im building not being suitable for road use according to someone, lol

I can see the reason why some said the kent 310 really is for race use only, it gives a poor torque, and comes in at about 4/4.5 k rpm, before that is like driving a bog standard 998. So imagine how it would be driving in the traffic, then its all your own preferencies after all.

i know itll be horrible in traffic, thats whats drawing me towards the 296, but then i dont use it for going to work, i get the train instead, so its not normally used in rush hour but to be honest i think the 310 will be great but stupid, not sure yet though, lol

Same issues with the 296, poor torque and low power below 4k rpm, so if you want it for trashing your mini in some trackdays, then go for it.
Otherwise go for something with less duration, i'd keep the 276 if you want good all-round performace and torque.

well the reason for strippping the engine was to send the gearbox off to be rebuilt, as it had a bit of a cruchy second gear, the 276 is quite heavily scored, and the followers are quite pitted, hence why im changing it, but to be honest im not 100 percent what to choose, i mean if i choose the 296 and dont like it, i could take the whole engine out and put the other one back in, whilst i change the cam, i know its a lot of *melonsing* around though...

To go back to the original question - the steel cover should fit over the 1.5s easily.
