thanks for all the replys and the warm welcome
i am a very young 44 !!!!!!! so insurance wont be a problem (hopefully , famous last words ! )
what i think i meant was is there much performance differance between a 100 and a 1.3 ??
would a 1000 with a stage one kit be a reasonable start or would i get bored with it too soon ??
(i currently drive a 520i ) just want something with caracter and fun to drive

Just for the record, I pay £410 fully comp with ALL mods declared, and agreed value of £4500 on that purple thing in my sig, and I'm 21! Thats also on a second policy with no no claims bonus!
Oh, and Macpilot, welcome to TMF! Some people say the best place to start is a 1275, and modify that (the 1.3i is an injection car, and not quite so easy to tune, if its tunability then a carburettor equipped car would be beneficial), and other people say the 998 is a great engine, as you can tune the nuts of them and they still don't go pop. But you'll never achieve the torque or power of a decent 1275 when tuning a 998 without spending SILLY money (we could be talking £5-6k+ just on the engine).
If you drive a 520i then I would suggest getting a 1275, and as insurance won't be an issue, maybe have it taken out to 1293cc and see where you want to go after that!
