I have got a 1993 mayfair.
It has had an engine from a 88/89 metro put into it ( not sure why as this was a leaded engine unless it has the newer head on it)
Anyway what i need to know is how to prove this to the MOT station, so that they test it as a car without a CAT. I have read in other posts that this is what can be done but I am not sure how to prove it.
Any ideas anyone?

I have to say that I dunno about this. Now that is bad because I used to be an MOT tester!
The rules I followed said that if the car was first registered after the 1st August '92 then it had to pass the CAT emmissions test (and a normal car without a converter wouldn't pass).
I honestly dunno about this age of the engine thing. I think it may be more relevant for kit cars and 'Q' plates to be honest. It is not something I ever came across though.

oooh hang on, had a look in me old paperwork
if the engine code aint in the emissions machine database (which the tester has to type in before the test) you do a 'not exact match' test. If you can't read the engine code then you have to assume 'not exact match'. In this case the test is carried out as non cat.
This only counts for vehicles registered from 01/08/92 to 31/07/95!
After 01/08/95 you do a default cat test rather than a car specific one. :smartass:
EDIT: I've got brain strain now :saywhat:
need a beer after that!

I agree, MMM, can/could you supply a pdf of the whole MOT manual... I've researched what I've needed, most of the time basically having to go over said issues with an MOT tester..
Would be a superb addition to the TMF CD

According to the regulations, if you're engine number is not the right one for the model of car, they should test it to meet the criteria on that PDF:
Carbon Monoxide less than 3.5% and Hydrocarbons less than 1200 parts per million.
If the engine is correctly tuned it should meet those requirements fine without the converter. Again, this wouldn't be the case for a '95 on car (in that case it would have a default cat test).
To be honest, I would take it for the test with the cat on and talk to the guy at the station. I haven't tested a car for 6 years now so am a bit rusty on the rules!

GW, I can fish around at the garage I used to work at, and maybe they will have a full PDF manual. Other than that most of it can be downloaded from various places. I have alot of old notes from my training and some books, but it would take an age to PDF them all.
lemme see what I can do
speaking of the TMF CD, I gotta get me one!

Does it not matter tho if the car passes the test without a Cat ? they dont have to fail it just because its got a Cat do they ? ... Just a thought

was the car originally injected or was it carb??
i have a 1993 mayfair on an L was originally injected but the previous owner took out the injector and replaced it with a carb, and now there is no ecu and can't test the emmisions and the cat is of no use so i just took it out and got it MOT'd no problem

i've seen similar question when asked about kit cars . i dont know if you have to go as far as this, but quite often you have to get a letter off the manufacturer to say when the engine was built (i think this is for the SVA test).
if you could get a letter off the heritage people, that would sort it out.
