If you get problems, try mentioning if it is not resolved by a certain date then you will be contacting the FSA. Anyone issuing credit (monthly payments) has to follow a code of conduct. Look in the Traders reviews section, I have a thread there about Lancasters doing the renewal thiing on me. I got all the money back (except a tenner, but I had lost the will to argue!). I have found HIC is the cheapest for me, at 24 with a standard 998 in a dodgy Leicester postcode. £216 tpf&t.
Watch out for the renewal prices they send you on auto renewals, as mine went from £198/year in year 1 to £604 in year 2 (without my even knowing I had a policy with them!).

However my mate has told me he is getting learners insurance for something like £90 a month and you only pay for three months at a time i think, good times :(

has any body else heard about the age discrimination? wen i turned 21, my insurance dropped 400 over nite. as far as im aware im still the same i was wen i was 20 so not a clue why they did this. oh, and its not just me, loads of my mates have had huge reductions just for geting older. the weird thing is tho, we all drive faster and with better cars so guna cost more when we crash.
my first insurance was £2500 for a 1.7td astravan, it well takes the micky
im now 21 and pay £1800 for a 1.6i astravan
but hey, im self employed so i get it back! yay!

To me £1800 for a 21year-old on a diesel van seems excessive really, I have never paid more than £900 even when I had an MG Midget 1500 as my first car when I was 19. Wrote that off 5 years ago, got a modded Mini and the premium went DOWN to £570, even with the smash declared? I gvuess its classed as a business vehicle, so maybe rates are different?
