Right, I bought my mini 2weeks ago and thought everything was fine on it.. Yesterday i was doing a mini run to the Stafford Mini fair thing and all was going well untill i reached the 'A' Roads..
Basically, when i went over 60mph in 4th gear (bad idea!) The engine started spluttering/juddering and lost all power.. I dropped the car into 3rd to try and pick up speed etc and get running
back to normal but it continued to lose power. I pulled over, and left the car to tick over for a few minutes. Setting off again it seemed fine for a few minutes, then it began doing the same
thing but this time the engine completely cut out, so i gave the engine a good spray with WD40, and the car got me to Stafford (I was about 3 miles away).
After spending all day at Stafford, i got back to the car after buying new plugs, leads, dissy cap, rotor arm, points, condensor and coil.. Set back off home and whilst not on the A roads it ran
fine, then we reached the A roads, and the car spluttered and died. Once again after letting it tick over, it started and drove for a matter of metres. After this the car completely died and wouldnt
start, when turned on, when you lifted the clutch to set off and gave a little bit of revs its just cut out. I tried pulling the choke out when it began spluttering and this didnt help either.

I called the AA.. he changed the leads, dissy cap, rotar arm on the mini, but nothing else! The car started up better then it ever had, but still continued to do the same thing..
I've no idea what the problem could be? Could someone please try and help me, i would really appreciate it.

Thank you

dunno with the real problem and i am not fully capable on understanding the symptoms but it seems there are two possibility:
1. your valve spring had splitted into two
2. your carb is blocked of gunge and need full re haul

Hi there i have exactly the same problem i have recently had a new engine into the car and the car just completly cuts out with no warning and when i go to start it back up it takes ages to turn over. I am going to be visiting the place i got the engine fitted and will be finding out from a mini specialist to see what the problem is. if you havent already found the problem yet i will post and let you know how mine went.

it may be completly different for you 2, as a 95 sidewalk should have an injection engine unless you have swapped it for a carb when you had the engine changed?

Hi, I also have this problem with my car. It starts misfiring then cuts out intermittently. It hasn't done it for a month or so but started again today! It's very odd because I have replaced the coil, ignition module and the ht leads but it hasn't cured the problem. The problem is definatly ignition related I believe as the car just stops firing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In 3 years, did anyone get a result?
I'm searching as my 998cc 1988 Designer is waiting for some mobile mechanic tmw.
One day car was amazing, then chugging along, pulled over, non starter!
Changed, spark plugs, leads, coil (baluster) new vacuum unit on the dizzy. Once recovered home, it now starts but cuts out and sounds really rough and splittery after a few seconds. Oh yes, in me fiddling, I may have totally messed up the timing belt! Well, ok, I did mess up the timing by turning it by hand. Would this cause the non running drama? Don't want to get mugged for unnecessary work. Once it's running, it's straight to a specialist anyway. Ta in advance.

... There is no timing belt. Do a compression test from the sounds of it could be head gasket.

Mobile mechanic been and gone. Compression test. 1. 170. 2. 140. 3.160. 4. 170. He got it running ok, but still not 100%. He suggested carb stripped and cleaned. Went to start it 1 hour later now it won't run again! Brrrrilliant!!

There's another mobile mechanic coming today. If he can't fix it, it's a tow to the nearest garage. I'll update once I know what the drama is.
