age won't affect your insurance ive you've only been driving a little while then id say atleast wait a year maybe 2 before you do anything drastic to the engine. a stage 1 kit is a killer to some peoples insurance these days so id say wait until you have a few years no claims and your insurance is cheaper.

would agree the 850 can be made into a nice little engine with some work,

would agree the 850 can be made into a nice little engine with some work, i've also heard you can put a 1275 crank into it and effectively make it a 1071 engine - (someone will correct that if its wrong though)

You're wrong... on multiple accounts..

1, the crank wouldn't fit ( main bearings are different diameters )
2. the 1071 is a short stroke 1275, not a long stroke small bore
3. the stroke of an 850 is 2.678", the stroke of a 1275 is 3.2", if you could fit the crank in, would make is 1015cc

I'll stop there..

And first thing to do when tuning an 850, is get it machined to run cam bearings, as standard the cam runs on the bare iron block.

But it's ok if you just keep to a mild cam (say AEA 630) and DO NOT fit strong valve springs!

I run an RC40- it's the best choice IMO, perfectly designed for fit and performance. Mine's a side exit, really subtle.
