Hi all

I have a 97 MPi cooper

Spec
1293CC Mpi Block
Stage 3 Head
1.5.1 Roller Rockers
K&N with 48mm Alloy Throttle Body

I have had my stage 3 head on teh car now for 3 months and the car has been running good. However in the last few weeks the car has been spluttering when accelerating. I was doing 40 on the motorway last night and when I was clear of teh road works I applied a little pressure to teh Gas pedal to increase my speed.

The car stated to splutter and then eventually corrected itself.

This has been happening a lot recently and wondered if anyone can shed any light?

Its almost like there is no petrol in the tank.... but its full :)

Fuel pressure I reckon, the o rings have probably perished and causing low pressure.

You can either fit a PBV adjustable regulator or try and strip the relief valve (very carefully) and replace the o rings - it's not supposed to be a serviceable part but I reckon with a bit of care it can be?

I had similar problems with my MPi, see the following threads..............

A basic check is when was the fuel filter last changed?

On the ACR4 what are the values alternating between and how fast?

The Fuel Filter was last changed less than a year ago when I built the car.

Cheers for that, I read the second Link you gave me, It had more info contained in there.

I have a spare set of injectors and also a spare fuel rail. I will try swapping these over at teh weekend and see if we get any sucess. I bought a spare Inlet manifold not long ago.

I will also check teh O rings on the rail and the Map Sensor.

I regularly get popping coming from the Throttle body when accelerating

went out on Saturday and I gave the car a service.

Changed the oil, sparks and set the gaps.

I also stripped off the fuel pressure rail and the injectors.

I bought a spare complete manifold just before christmas that was removed from a 00 sportspack.

From this I used the fuel rail and pipes, and left my original injectors.

I also noticed that the fuel pressure valve had 3bar marked on the top of it. Not sure if this one is standard or uprated???

I took the car for a drive. It is slightly better. Seams to have more pull... but still has the spluttering around the 3-4000 rpm mark when on the motorway or in 2,3 or 4th when pulling away.

Any other suggestions apart from FSE adjustable pressure valve?

I had similar symptoms with my mpi, after 12 months of trying all sorts of fixes it was finally cured by replacing the Fuel Pump Relay Part No YWB100970, plenty on Ebay as the same relay fitted to other Rover models including MGF, I think I paid about £5 for mine and its simply a straight swop over. Usual signs of a failed or failing relay are sign of burning around connectors on the relay, just pull to multi plug off and have look.

I have a spare inlet set up of manifold, TB, Fuel rail all the sensors etc. etc. just as it came off another MPi but the IACV housing is broken - bugga, can't seem to buy the housing on its own? Someone posted a thread on here a while back about getting some made up from alloy (his dad had a workshop I think), can anyone remember who it was?
Tried the search facility but I think the info was buired in another thread?

please forgive me for being dumb here

But the wiring diagram shows the fuel pump being connected to the inertia switch > engine compartment fusebox > the main relay pack in the engine bay.

Is this the fuel pump relay you are refering to????

or is it somewhere else?

The fuel pump relay is to the left of the air filter box when looking from the front of engine, black plastic square unit with plugs connected to it.
