Sounds to me like it could be worn engine mounts/steadys, try rocking the engine backwards and forwards when parked and check for play

It ould be one of several things, but make sure it's not too much advance on the ignition timing as if it is and it is knocking as a result of that, you will end up with broken piston rings and an expensive engine re-build.
However, it could be a drive shaft, an engine mounting or engine steady bush, an exhaust mounting or even a damaged gear-change linkage.
It's impossible to tell without seeing and driving it, I'm afraid.

mine was doing the same
it was an exhaust U bolt hitting the underside of the car ,
but yours may be a different problem

also worth checking for cracks in the body around the subframe mounts and stabilizer mounts

i had this..............
i had droped a door screw down the back off the subframe and it was traped between the subby and steering rack so when i accelerated or braked it knocked.

Big question coming up;

Is it a single knock, or a knock-knock-knock-knock, etc, etc.

Also do you feel an impact through the pedals or floor?

hi dave, yes i do feel impact through the pedals and sometimes it can go knock knock knock knock but been driving like it for a while so i know how to avoid it.. more gentle acceleration it seems. Bouncy roads seems to make it worst also

Sounds more likely to be engine mounts, but best to get it checked...
I had exactly this a short while ago with my MPi...

As per PM, I'm with Tom, check engine mounts and steadies.

To check lower mounts you could put jack under the engine and push the sump up a bit, does the suspension go up, or the mount look like it's moving.

Top steady, check by grabbing top of engine and trying to rock back and forth, with handbrake on and on level ground.

Hi Guys,

I have a similar sort of problem to do with acceleration on my Rover mini italian job.

It seems that when i accelerate in gear 1, 2 or 3 i get a slight grinding noise before its time to change gear, it sounds like its coming from the drivers area, not to sure whether or not its outside in the engine area or inside around the 3 dials, its only really started doing it about 3 weeks now I've noticed.

Any ideas what it could be? as I'm baffled!!!

Thanks

Martin.
