Its possibly a burnt valve or perhaps snapped a pushrod?
Take your rocker cover off and start the engine and make sure everythings as it should. It wont spray oil everywhere.
Check your compressions, though if a valve isnt opening it wont effect compression.

cheers for the response, im hopefully getting the car towed back tomorrow and ill give some of your ideas ago and get back to you. I can try and get hold of a compression tester and see what that brings up. Plus I just got hold of some nice shiny new discs pads and tie rods for her so it'll be rewarding when i get back on the road
