there was one person (possibly on minifity?) using map with a 300 deg cam, the 286 will be fine

There would be no diffrence in using TPS or MAP as your load on your ECU. The position of the dash pot will change the amount of spark you need. But the position of the dash pot will be dependant on the RPM and the load of the engine.
If you had it on a TPS and you had your foot half way down on the throttle (50%) and the engine was at 5000rpm the ECU would give what ever ignition was in that cell on the map.
If you had it on a Manifold pressure sensor with your foot half way down. lets say -5psi. (-10psi being closed throttle and 0 psi being atmospheric) and the engine was at 5000 rpm the ecu would give what ever ignition was in that cell on the map.
A manifold pressure sensor would be easier to fit. But its a little bit more tricky to map over a TPS.
