Description of problem :
Just last week I noticed that the indicators on my Mini had stopped working, the stalk moves but nothing happens. But the hazards still worked and all of the bulbs too. After some digging and searching on here it seemed it could be a couple of things. One of the easiest ways to fix it looked to be to change the indicator flasher unit so I rang and ordered this from Mini Spares, hoping it would be a quick fix. The part has arrived but I am now having problems locating the indicator flasher unit.



Does anyone know were the unit is or if there is anything else that could be causing the problem?

The flasher unit is under the dash to the right of the steering wheel.

when you flick the stalk do you get indicator light but no flash? if so its probly the flasher unit, If not it could be your stalk.

When you flick the stalk nothing happens - no dash light, exterior indicator light, etc.

Just how far underneath the dash is it? I've had a good feel and a look with a torch and can't find anything!

Sorry to be a bit dim, but what exactly is this? Ia it the same as a flasher unit? How would this be tested?

(I'm a bit clueless when it comes to electrics! )

nip into your local motor factors and buy your self a little multi meter or voltage tester

it will make finding problems like this so much easier

You won't find it there on a 1999 Mini!

I believe it will be on the bulkhead under the bonnet, close to the wiper motor. However if the hazards are working then I doubt the flasher unit is at fault.

The indicator indicator stalk is fed from the indicator relay which is in the engine bay, r/h side at the back. The easiest way the check it , is to swap it for one of the other two in there, lights or fogs. Check that they are five pin relays which is what the indicator relay is. Also if you get someone else to switch on the ingition, you should here and feel it click.

I don't think the problem will be with the flasher unit because the hazards and indicators work off the same unit.

It could be a problem with the hazard switch. As well as turning on the hazards, it cuts off the power to the indicator circuit.

You can test this by removing the hazard switch. Then on the multi pin pig, bridge the two indicator wires with a short piece of wire. If the indicators now work, the hazard switch is faulty.

i don't know the wiring on the later minis but the 90's ones have 2 relays 1 for hazards and 1 for indicators

do you know this for fact or are you guessing ?

That is a fact. Minis from 1992 ish onwards had a combined flasher unit for indicators and hazards.

the flasher/hazard unit is located behind the dash(inside car) on mpi cars you will have to remove it to gain access.
