98% of the drive is taken up by winsxs folder which is needed to run windows but it just keeps getting bigger.

My wife and daughter do the same with their laptops. It's also a good idea because I believe that if you have to format your PC or laptop and re-boot from start up discs, the D: drive isn't affected and so all the files should still be there.

do you have a second partion on your laptop ie C: is full do you have D:?
i cant remember any winsx folder when i had vista, are you sure this isnt where your back up folders are stored?
i have got a d drive which has over 100gb free(music, photos etc are stored there) but programs install to c . (itunes for example or new drivers) and cant seem to change it..
i think they are some sort of back up files but have read that the system wont work without them..

Get rid of system restore, clear all caches or anything temporary that isnt needed and i'm sure you'll see a drop.

sorry had to pop out quickly right if you have a D: drive when you install a programme it automaticaly uses C: drive so when it comes up and says install yes or cancel you will see it has a path i.e C:windows/cpanel/install/office.exe just remove the C: and replace with a D; and it will install to the D: drive try it
but before i even get that far its giving me the not enough space on disk message.
