Hi ive got a 6 point safety devices roll cage fitted in my mini. it bolts to the the floor but was wondering is it best to put additional plates to spread the pressure in the event of a crash. If so what thickness plates do i need and how long and wide also do i put them inside or outside (Hopefully outside) .

no you dont, as with every other rollcage for every other car the plate are welded under the feet on the inside, usualy 3mm thick steel

Ow no thats not good. Its a safety devices cage with quiet large feet on anyway would just welding it in make it better and of course safer.

i would put plates on the outside 3-4mm thick on the outersills and under the arches. you could weld them in but id rather have something on the outside of where your boltsing too.. if you put a bolt through the floor with a plate on the outside and it does pull its not gonna put a large plate through the floor is it. weld it if you like but it wld prob be easier to make a couple of plates than strip the car out and weld.. and if youve got door pockets still welding inside them all the way round is not nice.

I have a safety devices bolt in cage fitted, and as mini93 says put it inside and from 3mm, but there is nothing stopping you putting some on the outside as well. Typically you would have the plate at least 20mm bigger than the mounting point. If you want send me a PM with your email address and ill send a few pictures of mine through.

you do really still need plates under the feet, spreads load as you can imagin, iv got a weld in cage in my rally car and that uses a welded in constructed box then the cage welded onto the box.

if you havent been supplied a plate pack and the cage is new get onto the company and enquire where the plates are, if your not that fussed go ahead and make some, 3mm thick, use the cage feet as templates for the hole positions, when designing the plate where you can, the A and B pillers have the plate extending up onto the sill...not sure why but im just going on what iv seen previously...such as this image of my friends peugeot...

can just about see in the passenger footwell under the Aand B pillers.

bolt the cage through the floor tack in several places...remove cage, seam weld hitting the plates to form into the shape of the shell, sure you can visualise lol

Thanks mate appreciate the response that sounds like the best answer as it was a nightmare to fit and dont want to take it back out again. But from a safety view is it going to be safe enough
