Not sure on the exact legalities, but it used to be that if you looked straight down from above the wheel then you shouldn't be able to see the tyre tread. :(

just a thought on this, if i was to have wheels that stuck out further than the arches but then say taped a match stick to the arch sticking out and considered it part of the arch would this make it legal or would being a smartarse get me in handcuffs?

edit: dont jump on me here, i know im being silly but it shold be viable in theory

in thoery it would work ild love to do that to a police officer to see what they said lol

i failed on it twice, but i was taking the *yellow human water* basically, i know the tester but i would rather it fail and i fix it than him as a mate pass it and its not right, ive seen the book ( / his computer screen) it clearly stated

looking down on the wheel, tread cannot be visible

edit: thats the 3rd time today ive been too slow :(

It was something he made up then, or wrote himself, it's not a testable item and hasn't been in the 15 years i've been testing.

here you go, look yourself...

The MOT Inspection Manual

http://www.motinfo.g...m3i00000001.htm

This is the real manual, not one made up by a third party. Click contents at the top then search the tyres section.

I agree this is not a testable item...

But as for an arch made from a match stick or lolly pop stick it has flat sides... arches by definition have curved sides so bang goes that idea.

sure i bought a retro cars mag a while back that had a mini with a honda engine in the front. His front wheels were too wide so he had some carpet stuff glued to the inside of the arch so that it covered the excess tread shown
