Can anyone tell me what the best process is to get a good finish when removing the rear seats and replacing them with MDF (carpeted), what would be the best way to get the right shape and acheive a good fit? alot of trial and error?

I want to mount speakers in the rear part (backrest) of the seat. And on the Floor part I may want to raise the rear up a few inches to give me a level surface for 2 Horizontally Mounted 5lb N2O bottles, jobs made alot harder because of rollcage But I think I can work around it :)

Any help/suggestions much appreciated!

All the best

I dont understand how you want the MDF to fit.

Theres a few ways of doing this.

If I was going to remove my rear seats for good, I would cut the door pockets out, and also cut the seat base back to the "Bulkhead" thing so there is as little seat in the bac as possible.

Surely if you wanted to mount speakers on the back rest you would have to cut through into th boot. OR bring the MDF forward from the seat rest. But then you would have the drum effect against the metal seats.

I always thought that the rear seat assembly gives the cars shell some strength :)

The ends of the lower bench are supported/fixed to the side bins :)

the rear seat bench does give 'some' rigidity to the rear of the shell, which is the reason for me installing a roll cage in mine, to balance that out

It has a rollcage so plenty of rigidity :) should i just use the seat backing as a rough template? cut out of card for a template and then alter where needed, cut out the MDF, get it a snug fit and then carpet it? is there any tricks to getting a professional finish? Im not sure I want to be cutting holes into the boot so i may think of another way to mount the speakers.

Have u put carpet over the rear bins?

If so how did u finish off the top bits?

Fold carpet over lip and put chrome trim back to hold it?

I always thought that the rear seat assembly gives the cars shell some strength :dontgetit:

The ends of the lower bench are supported/fixed to the side bins :dontgetit:

Assuming you are talking about the seats here? They only drop into place so can't do anything for shell rigidity. If you mean the metal where the seat sits (I don't think you are tho are you?)

what?

what i mean was the rear bins carpeted (the ones each side of the rear seats)

as mine keep getting scuffed and scratched :dontgetit:

just whanted to know if the chrome strip will fit back on with the extra thickness of the carpet?

I think he was reffering to the earlier comment about the seat giving the shell some strength

And about carpeting the bins, Id just carpet right up to the lip where the chrome strip clips on.

Theyre not very strong and I think they will easily get bent when forcing them over the carpet.

And when they bend they crease the middle and make them very hard to get right and put back on... trust me :dontgetit:

when we removed the rear seats in my brothers car and had it re carpeted, we used polystyrene board, it is much lighter than wood, and is very easily cut and shaped. then we used spray adhesive to stick the carpet to it with.

did the job a treat! :dontgetit:
