Using the rule of thunb where your gearbox has bolts instead of studs is not a good idea, I know that people have changed to bolts where previously their transmission had studs ;)

The only sure way method to tell is a bore gauge across the two axes............. :o otherwise it's lucky dip time :D

As for lock tabs, they are no longer used within the auto industry because of reliability issues, a stud locking compound is the preferred method.

I find the part number on the diff casing a good guide....

if it's a 22g* p/n and a rod or it's a remote or magic wand then gaskets...

if it's a DAM* p/n then RTV

the only down fall to this is where some previous owner has swapped the diff case..

Hi,

Im currently overhauling my engine which ive removed from my mini.

I need to replace the gasket that fits between the gearbox differential housing and gearbox sump. I spoke to a friend who told me this is pretty simple, bend back the metal clips locking the bolts in place and simply take it off. He told me there was a spring and ball bearing that may pop out, and this is to do with oil pressure relief or something????

Anyway...can anyone give me any pointers. Currently my engine and block are out of my mini and the block is bolted to the gearbox. I dont plan to speerate the two.

thanks

I think he has taken it out already.

All my gearboxes are DAM castings so shouldnt have gaskets? is it the diff housing upper and lower that wont have them or do the output shaft covers not have them either?

Hi a bit of a thread revival here.

After changing the Diff Pin on the engine and fitting it to the car in April I have done about 1000 miles with no problems.

However over the last two days the engine has developed a monumental oil leak from the diff housing. I think it is either from the housing gasket or the side cover the bolts on both are all tight.

Obviously this was done before reading this thread and upon stripping the diff I found gaskets had been used on a previous rebuild so I just replaced them, and also used gasket compound.

The engine is a 1992 SPI and the diff housing uses bolts.

Firstly I guess the car should not have gaskets on the diff am I correct? also can I get the diff cover back off to clean it up and re seal with the engine in the car? or is it engine back out time?

Cheers

A quick bump as the engine is coming out at the weekend unless there is an easier way.

Cheers

Hi,

I have been following this thread as Iam stripping mine down as part of an overall rebuild. I have an 83 998 and gearbox and dif is seperate. How do you tell which type, (gasket/no gasket), you have??

Also Kerrin, would ove to see some pictures of the areas you are talking about, seals, gaskets etc.

Thanks,

Graham

i believe its there to help with gear selection and to kind of keep the car in gear. I maybe wrong though.

You replaced the seals and they still leak?...unlucky. I ended up changing all mine on the diff housing and on the output flanges including the gear selector oil seal. Soo far soo good.

Hi Grahama.
Pictures as requested. Just done a diff rebuild and took these just in case.
Gasket sets.
Posted Image

Diff in place, You will get two different types of gasket in the set, but when you offer them up to the diff it will be easy to see which ones to use.

Posted Image

Gaskets fitted and diff cover on.

Posted Image

Shims which were removed from this diff.

Posted Image

Gasket and shims in place. Then bolt on the side cover and repeat for the other side. No shims in the other side, dont forget the spring and ball bearing.

Posted Image

Oil seal on selector shaft, I used a long reach socket to push it all the way down.

Hope this helps

Andy

OOps sorry Grahama. just checked my wording in the last post. What I meant to say is that when i stripped this gearbox these are the shims I removed and am now putting back in. They are needed for the preloading on the bearing, i think.
If you are interested then why not take a look at the complete gearbox rebuild I did in the engine build section of the forum. Its called "Im gonna build a gearbox want to watch". hope it helps.
