one of my mates told me about a spi cooper, yesterday that someone had traded in on the scrappage scheme. apparently the car had one rust patch on it on the right hand a panel and had done hardly any miles  the scrapyard was selling the car for 500 quid!!!! the only catch was that the car had to be stripped and the bare shell sent back to be crushed. he tryed to buy the car but by the time he had gone back someone else beat him to it
it seems to me as a complete waste of a half decent mini..

There was an MPi which was traded in up north...

The only things I could see which would need attention was the lip below the front window screen - NOTHING else.

It was in better nick than some of mine!

There was a girl on Radio 1 the other night who traded her Mini in on the scrappage scheme last year for a new Polo, only to have it whizz past her on the A1 a couple of weeks ago.

I'm all for saving cars, but if it's supposed to have been scrapped, hmmm.

If a car is traded in under the 'scappage' scheme, it won't need to be scapped everytime. The deal is 1k from the dealer and 1k from the gov, if the dealer wants he can 'buy' the car himself and sell it or keep it. So I think some dealers are as guilty as the gov on this terrible scheme.

Where did you get this information from?

I've always been told they basically become like "CAT B" vehicles and therefore can be broken but in no way can they be brought back onto the roads (the shell can be used as a track shell but thats it)

Those were both traded in under the SC. Both were as close to mint as a mini gets. Never mind. The way I look at it is that for everyone that goes 1 I can get some cheap parts for mine and 2 mine becomes worth more.

There was a question asked in the Honest John column of the Telegraph motoring section the other week about this.

The guy had traded a high mileage but otherwise sound BMW 3 series on the scrappage and was feeling guilty.

Honest John replied saying lots of "scrapped" cars are sneaking through under false identities as the scrap man just shows the government bod a lump of squashed metal.

He also said quite a lot of cars have been sent to Eastern Europe.

As for the trader, I can see it. If someone wanting to use the scrappage comes in with a car that could be turned for more than £2k then its quids in. You tell them its been scrapped, charge more for the car you're selling (as the £2k off is often off a special "scrappage" price), then sell the scrapped car out the back door.

Don't get me started!

My local scrappy had 7 minis in at one point. 4 were rover coopers, and 3 of them were in better nick than my car! seriously, low miles, tiny amount of rust, no accident damage. All ended up crushed.

It's rather sad. ;)

From a local BMW dealer: Once the car is traded in, it is up to us whether we claim £1k from government or sell it on. If we claim, then the V5 goes back as scrapped.

So they CAN actually sell it on? (i.e. the dealers? - but once it reaches the local scappy its there to stay...) :)
