From a local BMW dealer: Once the car is traded in, it is up to us whether we claim £1k from government or sell it on. If we claim, then the V5 goes back as scrapped.

So they CAN actually sell it on? (i.e. the dealers? - but once it reaches the local scappy its there to stay...) :)

Yes its is up to the dealer to sell if they want to, But many dont as it is to much hassle to do so.
Good news i work in the motor trade and just to let you know that the scrappage as ended there is no more money to be given out to dealers! ITS OVER!
many dealers are doing there own version called swoppage that give up to £3K for your old car but thats UP TO 3k so they wont give that to a classic mini as they will only go on the book price. My mates 99 V reg Downton is booking at 1K even though it worth alot more than that.

If a car is traded in under the 'scappage' scheme, it won't need to be scapped everytime. The deal is 1k from the dealer and 1k from the gov, if the dealer wants he can 'buy' the car himself and sell it or keep it. So I think some dealers are as guilty as the gov on this terrible scheme.

Where did you get this information from?

I've always been told they basically become like "CAT B" vehicles and therefore can be broken but in no way can they be brought back onto the roads (the shell can be used as a track shell but thats it)

My mate works for a large dealer, so info is first hand. That's why I said the dealers are guilty too as the place this guy works has saved a few classics from the crusher.

Thank GOD that terrible idea has finally finished. I know of 3 Minis and 2 MGBGTs at my local scrapyard, all in under scrappage.

If the car traded in was worth more than the £2k that the dealer discounted off the new car, then it makes business sense to sell it for more than the £2k they knocked off the car? Or at least the £1k that they would have got from the government as the rest is an "instore" discount. Anything over the £1k they lost from the government payout would in theory be a reduction in loss? I doubt many new car dealerships would actively sell or advertise these cars on their forecourt though, as it is not what they would have wanted to be showing to the new-car buying public?

ALSO, I would guess now is a good time to buy a classic off of some dealers- some garages will have agreed to trade cars under the scrappage scheme without knowing the money has run out. That means they will be desperate to get rid of them asap!

It would become a Cat B. but if the punter just wants a 2K discount, there's nothing to stop the dealer giving it and selling on the trade in - particularly if it will fetch far more than the 1K they'd get out of the scheme - the scrapage scheme isn't involved & it serves the owner right if they were prepared to have their Mini crushed when it would have made more than its scrappage bounty on Ebay.

It does seem a shame to have had classics involved in the scheme. I know of a mint tax exempt Austin Healey Sprite which was broken, traded in for a Kia.. :proud: I wish I'd have known the owner, I'd have happily swapped my polo for it before hand!!

Approx. 4000 classics were scrapped in the end using this scheme according to Classic Car News. Many MGB's and Mini's went in and sadly a now even rarer one owner low mileage Elf/Hornet.......... :dontgetit:
Most classics were scrapped by pensioners towards a new Kia with a 7-year warranty.
The most scrapped modern car was the Nissan Micra!
