Does anyone here add nitrogen when inflating their mini tyres? What proportion?

I don't mean nitrous oxide, by the way ;D

We do it at work. Granted they are aircraft tyres pumped up to 110psi, but we just put 100% nitrogen in them.

I've never known anyone to do it to a road car, can't realy see the point on doing it to a mini.
Although the Nissan GTR comes with nitrogen filled tyres.

Allegedly, it raises MPG on road cars.. A friend of mine works in kwikfit, and they offer it.

its just another gas. they use it in aircrafts as nitrogen doesnt react in the same way as air does when it gets cold and hot and expands and srink. in a road car useless

a guy at a garage mentioned this to me a little while ago.. can someone tell me what the actual benefits are of doing this because personally i see this being pointless untill proven ;)

nitrogen is lighter than air and doesnt react the same to differeing temperatures, so you get a constant tyre pressure in most conditions, and it also reduces the unsprung weight of the car. In theory anyway ;)

How much do kwik fit charge for this service anyway?

Is nitrogen really lighter than air? Air is made up of 78% nitrogen and 20% oxygen. How can it be much lighter? If that were the case Oxygen would have to be a really heavy gas and it isn't.

air is the general term for that mix of gasses, which does contain 'heavy' gasses, so air HAS to be heavier than pure nitrogen.

Admittedly you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Main advantage is that it expands less with heat. No use on a road car as the tyres never get hot enough.

With my race car,

air the rise in tyre pressure was 4psi after 1 run (sprinting)

nitrogen the rise was just under 2psi after 1 run

So when tyre pressures matter, like to me 2psi rise it alot better than 4psi ;)
