I should know better than to go anywhere near my Mini when I've had a week like this week >_<

While accessing the subframe tower bolts, I managed to break a bit off of this device.

Given that I don't remember ever having seen any of these on a non-injection Mini, I presume I am posting this in the right place. Mine is a 1998 MPi.

The device in question is mounted on the left hand side, behind the coolant header tank and has two pipes connected, one of which disappears into the bowels of the injection unit somewhere, and the other (the one I have broken off) disappears into the inner wing. It's the pipe on the right hand side of the picture.

Somewhat embarassed, I'm asking if any of you experts tell me what this bit does?

That's the control valve for the charcoal cannister which traps fuel vapours, i have some spare units/pipes etc if you need one just let me know!
