Sorry for the hijack, but does anyone have a picture of the 'small' tank, my 87 mayfair has one in :S Do i assume from this that the tank was not the original for the car then?

The small 5.5 gallon tank had the securing strap running over the top and my first Mini (a 1975 MK3 Mini 1000) came with this type of fuel tank. Check out the shop pdf pages on Somerford Minis website as you'll find one illustrated there.

I believe the Mini 1275GT got the 7.5 gallon tank first and that could well have been around 1974?

Cant find any pictures of it, and I also cant find it on any of the spares sites. The tank has a completely flat profile on the right hand side (as your looking at it) but is only an inch or so wide from the seal between the two halves.

Your Mini would have originally come with the 7.5 gallon tank.

Just to confirm, I had a genuine '72 saloon which had a remote style floor. Was, however, registered as a 998cc. Sounds like one of the earlier rod gearbox cars ('73, '74, something around there)

The Mini didn't switch to rod change until 1973 and where as most models had the remote change up to that point only the Mini 850 (plus no doubt the 850cc Mini Van & Pick-up?) retained the old 'magic wand' gear-change before switching to rod change too.

Well I have the 7.5 gallon tank in my 1990 Mini Cooper and it's part 76 here (which describes it as the diagonal type): -

hi guys, appologies for not being on for a few days, but i have a few updates:

found a boot latch, with "8 72" stamped on it, looks same kind of stamp theyd use on the plates, mean anything apart from the obvious?
wiper motor cover has a million numbers on it
but best of all, i failed to notice a plate on the n/s inner wing which is aparently a shell number... i hve put a picture below.

Attached File  P1010001.JPG   208.77K   4 downloads

i have a passenger door and parts still on the shell, i will have a look tommorow for another stamp.

as for vic check, they have no way of telling the parts for the car are not the original ones, i have the subframes from the car, although the rear one would have been replaced due to rust so this does not matter, so i have a complete shell, both frames, probably dig the brakes out of the scrap pile if it comes to it, so im not too worried about a check.

may have to take the beam axle off it for the check though haha!

so where do i go from here with these numbers etc ive found? i really want to find the indentity for it and keep it a genuine car

thank
scott

Further help with dating can be found from the triplex logo in the corners of the screens. Again this is when the glass was made, but generally it wasn't lying around for long.

i dont have any glass sadly, i need to find out how to go about getting a logbook and reg number for it, someone on here must have come across this kind of situation before, what with the amount of them being binned still, its important to keep as many identities with the cars as possible, rather than just going and buying a logbook.

besides, how easy is it to get a tax exempt mk3 logbook and plates if you dont know the right people!

Ug, don't mention tax-exempt Mk3 logbooks... it's a dirty word(s)!

I'm afraid if there's no way to trace the original 'chassis' number, then 'officially speaking' it should go on a 'Q' plate (indeterminable age).

Check out your door release latches, here's mine on my 1975 car -

so if this is the case, how do you retreive the chassis number from a car that never had one? as others were saying earlier on.

this seems to just be going round in circles, any tax exempt breakers out there pm me, ive had enough, ill buy a "car" just so i can get my "car" "reshelled" all this biz about not putting a different logbook on your car is rubbish, as long as its the same year, who cares.

scott.

The DVLA care because it's effectively ringing.

But lots of people do it so good luck.
