Model:Rover Cooper (SPi)
Year:1995

Hi everyone,

i was just wondering how to fit crankcase breather filters i was just wondering if the pipe leading from the pipe into the manifold needs to be kept or you just disconnect the pipe and put the filter on the end.

any help appreciated

Thanks

the pipe at the manifold end needs to be closed off.

note that this mod is not really good for road cars, because it will make the oil dirty and harm your engine whilst dirtying your engine bay

Your best keeping the original system, filters are not very good at all for an engine, you need to create a vaccum in the crankcase to take away the vapours and pressure in the crankcase, without it the vapour and pressure will just build up.

Sorry to hi-jack this but I have one of these breathers on my car and often get an oily smell in the car + dirty engine bay. What would I need to do to get remove the breather and put it back as it should be?

I have a 91 Carb Cooper.

Could i simply fit a take off pipe into the rocker cover and let them vent into there - or does it need to be connected to the inlet to create the vacuum?

Im concerned doing this as i will be fitting Megajolt with MAP sensor and don't want it getting all gunged up!

I have my breather pipes running into a length of hose that runs under the car and away. No oily smells but it doesn't create a vacuum obviously.

Although interestingly there an article by Keith Calver on the Mini Spares website that appears to suggest it isnt an issue although they seem to have disappeared at the mo.

The carb sucks the fumes out the breathers, you could fit a catch tank?

If you don't have suction on the crankcase - you WILL have oil leaks and eventually a slipping clutch. Piping in the air cleaner will just plaster it with messy oil! I can only suggest a small hole is drilled in the weber inlet manifold *(I used 1/8" diameter) and the breather hose connected to that. These breather filters are a big waste of money!

I actually drilled and tapped the manifold for a servo take off - then filled the take-off with plastic metal, and then drilled a 1/8" hole through the filling.

How would that work? As I have no vacuum at all from the inlet track? Or would the catch tack be inbetween the breathers and the manifold?

I need to have 2 vac pipes fitted into the carb and im considering having 4 fitted (2 on each branch) for the vac advance and the others for the breathers?

Opinions?
