Sprite - 1995

Hello everbody!

I seem to have a very loud/high pitched buzz coming from my boot area, more specifically its coming from the petrol tank... so I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the cause/solution to this problem?

I looked through previous posts and found one which was exactly the same as the issue i've got and apparently its the fuel pump, but a solution was not tendered...it was just recommended that the boot be insulated to mask the sound...but I dont remember my previous mini making such a loud buzz!?!

I was wondering if the fuel pump maybe on the way out or something as I'm sure this cant be "normal"?!?

Any help/info would be appreciated!?!

Cheers,
Pete :thumbsupmight be involved with the problem?[/b]

When I had my Sprite, there was alway a fuel pump buzz present, not really loud, but noticeable. Never had any problems with it and just got used to it. :)

Thanks for the reply AlexP...reassuring to know that's it's not just my mini that's a bit vocal in the boot! Could you hear the buzz when you were driving along or was it not noticeable once you were moving? I guess I could kinda seal the whole parcel shelf area with dynamat or something...I bet that might mask it enough so that i can just about cope with it! :)

Is the buzzing constant? And is it particularly loud? In my SPi if I'm stationary and the radio off, I can hear a faint whine from the fuel pump but not very prominent. It does sound loud when you first turn on the ignition. If it is an onimous, continuous buzz when you are driving along then I don't know the answer for definite - only that it does sound like the fuel pump is making the noise.

Fewwwww! Thank goodness someone else has this noise too. I had my radio off the other day and I was sitting at the lights, and I had a panic. I thought there was a big bee by my back window :) Hahahahah.
But then when I got home I opened the boot and it sounds like my fuel pump is a bit loud too. This person told me before that your Mini can fail it's mot for the fuel pump being too loud!?
Mine is just lik a buzzing, but now it's hardly noticable. When you have the boot open when the car is running on tick over you can hear it then but I supose you just get used to the noise!

So if it's buzzing will it fail its mot or will I be fine?? Mot is a week today so it best not fail on something like that ahah :)

Well as soon as you turn the key and get it to the point where by one more turn will start the engine(eg the oil light and battery light/s are on) the fuel pump does make the exact noise(loud buzz) but stops after approx 2 seconds(kinda like the fuel pump initializing)...but when the the engine is actually started the buzz is just constant! :)

ps - i've checked and there no bee's present! :)

In an injection mini the pump is going constantly to maintain the fuel pressure. I honestly don't know too much about injections as never owned or run one myself, but I suspect if the sound is 'more noticeable' than normal the pump may be struggling to maintain pressure.

Ah, that would make a lot of sense Guess-Works!! I really dont think this amount of noise/buzz is normal... guess a new fuel pump cant be too exp or hard to fit!?!

Does anyone know what kind of fuel system a 1995 Sprite has anyhow? Is it defo an Injection system? If so is it a multi or single point system??(not that o know the difference lol) :)

Mine is a 1995 sprite too haha. I supose if it's meant to be a bit loud then it's ok, but should be fine for mot then!
