It shouldn't be loud, just a low level whirring noise, if it's loud then the pump is probably on it's way out.

Is the buzzing constant? And is it particularly loud? In my SPi if I'm stationary and the radio off, I can hear a faint whine from the fuel pump but not very prominent. It does sound loud when you first turn on the ignition. If it is an onimous, continuous buzz when you are driving along then I don't know the answer for definite - only that it does sound like the fuel pump is making the noise.

Well as soon as you turn the key and get it to the point where by one more turn will start the engine(eg the oil light and battery light/s are on) the fuel pump does make the exact noise(loud buzz) but stops after approx 2 seconds(kinda like the fuel pump initializing)...but when the the engine is actually started the buzz is just constant!

ps - i've checked and there no bee's present! :(

That's exactly what mine does so I think you are fine.
If I turn the ignition on I can hear it go BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! then it stops after about 2 seconds or so, then when I start the engine it starts buzzing again. Apparently all it is, is the pump priming or something. So don't worry, it's normal
I can hear the buzz when I am at traffic lights, when it's just on tick over. But when I am going a long I hardly notice it at all. Oh and when I open the boot I can hear it obviouslly!

Oh forgot to say, I don't think mine ever used to be that loud but I can't hear it really when sitting in the drivers seat. It's very faint, but can obviously hear it when I open the boot. Is a new bump easy to fit ??

You will notice it with the boot open of course. You shouldn't be able to hear it on the move, but on tickover you should be able to hear a faint, high pitched buzz.

Before I splash the cash i may just remove the little bugger from the tank to see if i can see any obvious blocks/issues with the pump...

by the way - Does anyone know if a 1995 Sprite has the MPI or SPI fuel injection system??

Thanks!

I would be very surprised if your car failed on a noise that didnt reflect a safety issue...eg a buzzing noise...i mean, what the worst that could happen if your fuel pump failed...you'd slow down right! there again don't the brakes work off the servo...maybe that'd be an issue...but i still, dont think they'd fail a car for an enthusiastic x factor wannabe fuel pump!

Yeah I am sure it is located inside the fuel tank... but not 100% sure. Have a look tomorrow, I am sure you will be able to see it!

Hey very new to the forum but had this issue just this minute… had changed rear shocks which involved moving the fuel tank and what do u know when I put it back in its making this buzzing noise.

Deffo sounds like it was inside the tank but moving the fuel lines about and releasing them a little from the strap that holds the tank in place and now it’s gone.

I know this is an old post but if it helps someone then great 😊
