I just handed my Mini over to have a Stage 1 kit fitted (998cc version), and the mechanic was a little confused as to why the inlet manifold to the carb had a small grooved hole out of the top.

What's meant to be screwed into that hole? It's obviously not a fabricating mistake, but we have no idea what it's for.


EDIT: the hole is visible in this photo, on the left side of the inlet manifold.

It's for a servo take-off

Most kits come with the correct allen-key headed insert to screw in if you don't run a brake servo.

I don't recall having such an insert in my kit. Any Minispares Stage 1 buyers out there remember where the insert was included in the packaging?

Minispares inlet manifolds are usually supplied with the plug.

Yup I can confirm my Minispares kit had one, it was rattling about in the inlet fanimold box though.. could fall out easily!!

My manifold didn't come in a box it was wrapped in bubblewrap. So i'm assuming Minispares forgot to include an insert for me?

Bump. This is fairly urgent, i'm paying to have my car in a garage in Luton knowing full well that without that plug i can't drive the car back. Why has Minispares done this?

You'd probably be best asking them that.

I wouldn't imagine it's any special thread, a cut-down bolt of the correct size will do perfectly well. If the garage can't manage that I'd advise finding someone else!

Accidents happen. As suggested above, if you feel you are missing a part, it's best to discuss it with the supplier.

As for getting the car moving so you can get it out of the garage, try several different bolts as suggested above to see if something fits. On early cars, the servo port was large (5/8 UNF), it sounds like yours is much smaller. If it's fairly small and you just want to get the car running, find a rubber or vinyl tapered stopper/cork and press it in the hole. If your car is tuned OK (and doesn't backfire) the plug will stay put long enough for you to get the plug or a bolt that fits.

jeez get a grip I'm sure they didn't single you out its a £1 part either ring them and ask for another and wait a few days whilst its delivered or go find a bolt of same size, if you follow the link I posted earlier it gives the size.

As a footnote to Irostoke's last post...

If the later manifold you have still has the 5/8 UNF tap used on early cars like mine... a quick DIY plug can be made using an old Smiths temperature sender and some Teflon tape.

just out of curiousity, how tight does the bolt have to be (the one supplied with the kit) i have mine in, its quite lose, when i tighten it, it goes further down the hole, and i dont want to lose it in the manifold?
